Red brown old seymour duncan jazz bass pickups

Hello,
Today I bought a 1969 jazz bass. the previous owner told that the pickups were installed in 1982-1983 and that it's Seymour Duncans. I've never seen these pickups before. Does anybody know what pickups these are, with some details? They are brownish red. I really don't want to open them.
Regards,

Re: Red brown old seymour duncan jazz bass pickups

Welcome to the forum.

DC resistance meter readings will help to identify which SD models those pickups are. SJB-1 "Vintage" or, far more likely, SJB-2 "Hot".

The maroon plastic covers were something that SD was doing back in the early Eighties on Hot model replacement pickups for Fender style instruments. I recall trying - but not particularly liking - Hot Stack For Telecaster and for Stratocaster pickups finished in that colour of plastic.

+1 Probably a hot for jazz, and a DCR reading would narrow it down.

I had a Tele Hot Stack with that color cover and didn't care for it; I greatly prefer the current production STK-T2. I've yet to encounter a set of those jazz bass pickups in person, so I have no idea what they sound like.

Thanks for the reactions. I'm gonna measure it pretty soon and will post the readings. Pretty rare pick-ups if you ask me; I can't even find one picture on the internet of these pick-ups or some history about them.

I have one of those installed in the bridge position of my bass:

That particular pickup is a Hot Stack for Jazz Bass (STK-J2b) model, which I bought back around 1983 or '84. I didn't even realize that the maroon cover was a color code for anything, I bought it just for the specs and never changed it to be consistent with the Precision pickups.

That thing looks sharp bro

Cheers

I totally forgot. I have seen these before. Cliff Burton had a red Duncan Jazz bass pickup in the bridge of his Rickenbacker.

Nice looking old Jazz bass you have there. Enjoy it well.

I have one of those Duncan "Hots" in my '83 Hamer Blitz. Not sure which of the two it is. Never measured it either. Great pickups for sure.

Ahem - you OWN one. I happen to have it at my house!!!!

I'm bumming because I realize I don't have a bass amp, and the Roland Cube is ummm, lacking for transferring the awesome to my ears.

Re: Red brown old seymour duncan jazz bass pickups

Here's an offer out to any of you guys with the maroon hot stack bridge pickup (STK-J2B)... The maroon ones are hard to find so am wondering if anyone is will to trade the cover or the whole pickup for a brand new black one. I'll add $50 to the trade. Any interest?

Hello deadfoot, and welcome. Enjoy your time here.

If you're looking for a wider audience for sales or trades, try The Trading Post section.
However, good luck finding someone willing to part with an original SD maroon/red/whatever cover.
I've got two of those on my frankenstrat (Hot Stacks), and I'm never letting them go.
