Redoing lead wire with 22 gage rather than 28 gage

All, I just bought a SD pup (59) off of ebay. Failed to ask how much lead wire was left. To my suprise, it came and is rather short. Need to replace the lead wire.

I did some searching around on the internet for 4 conductor pup wire. It would appear as though pups use 28 gage wire. Had a hard time justifying paying more for shipping than what it was going to cost for a small peice of wire. So, i went to home depot and picked up a foot of 4 conductor, same color scheme as SD, shielded wire. However, HD didn't have any 28g, smallest they had was 22g.

Just curious, given the fact that this is ever so slightly larger wire, would this have much impact on tone? And if so, what?

Can't see it being an issue. There could be the tiniest different in resistance and I mean miniscule.

No way, there can be massive differences in tone because of the length and diameter of wire!

I use 24 gauge stranded wire in all my guitars because it's easy to work with. 28 should be just as good. 22 is pretty thick (which makes it harder to work with) and you'll get zero benefit from using it.

Keep in mind that your pickup is wound with at most 42 gauge, so anything bigger than that is already a plus.

If you're cheap like me, you can use a USB cable. 4 conductor plus shielding. Works like a charm.

huh... Never considered a USB cable. Nothing cheap about it. If it has shielding and 4 conductor, whats the diff? I can't imagine that short of a run would make any difference in tone with using even the cheapest of wire.

But, I could be wrong.
