Reeves Vintage Purple vs Fane Medusa 150c vs EVM 12L???

Since buying my Line 6 Helix, I've fallen hard for whichever Fane Hiwatt speaker they modeled and 65 Amps used for the free Allure IRs that Line 6 has on their site.

So I've been doing some research to figure out which new production speakers come close. I know that there are more clones out there, but I've narrowed it down to the Reeves Vintage Purple and the Fane Medusa 150c. I'm throwing the EVM into the mix because it's also a speaker that's known for a fairly even response with a big but tight bottom end. But can't find anything definitive on how the three speakers compare.

Have any of you folks compared a couple of these or all three?

Anybody? Lol

And I'll throw the Celestion G12K-100 in there for good measure, since I've read that it's similar in some ways to the old HiWatt Fanes.

Re: Reeves Vintage Purple vs Fane Medusa 150c vs EVM 12L???

I bought a Hiwatt 50 watt 74 504(?). I'm never much of a low watt amp guy for anything but Bright Fender Blackfaces ,Marshalls and old Ampegs, ( I HATE the venerable 5e3 tweed cause of that volume just don't get it for me , nor does even the Grail Tweed Bassman ,well, at last the reissues ...ok, I am used to marshall fullstacks..so got a custom made low power 40m watt 2x6l6 twin ( would have much preferred the, 80 watt Hi power Twin Tweed, that has taken over desirability in the vintage amp world )that seems to work for me, and sure enough the 50 watt Hiwatt disapointed, but I'm hoping it's the speakers. I was using a Marshall 4x12 Greenback cabinet.

So I bought a Medusa, the 150, not the 150C. The 150C has a more of the classic Hiwatt Purple Fane tone IIRC, but I'm not much of stamped frame speaker guy ...the 150 is cast frame.

I am soon , I hope,l going to be pairing it with a EV12l.
Both are highly efficient , well, at least the 12l, but I think the Fane Medusa also.

If that don't give make the volume/headroom I need with my 50 watter , then I am dumping it and going to set my sights on a 100 Watt Hiwatt head, which is doubtful i could ever swing./

By all accounts, the Medusa /12L 2x12 combo works a treat with Hiwatts- check out youtube, there is a guy with a video of it, and also some web posts about same combination.

Hoping soon to try mine.i want Clean Clean Clean, with digging in giving some glorious on the edge of clean breakup. I don't want the modified Crunchy/Clean Petey T. sound.

I cannot give any info on the speakers other than the Medusa 150 (not the c). These are by far the best speakers I have tried to date. They have a refinement to them that I haven't heard in any other speaker. It has a big low end that is tight and punchy; the treble is present but not harsh in any way. Just a fantastic speaker that works wonders with multiple amps (I have quite a few, and have owned others not in my signature below). From what I have read the Reeves Vintage Purple have more of the old school Fane sound than the Medusa 150. I can't comment on it, just have read that. All I know is that when you push the Medusa 150 it shoves you back! They are efficient and sound incredible! The Medusa line is no longer being made, so if you have a source to get the 150c, I would say do it, because your chances of trying them again will be a lot less.

Re: Reeves Vintage Purple vs Fane Medusa 150c vs EVM 12L???

Thanks, guys. I've seen the guy on YouTube with the Fane and EVM 12L. I had hoped that he would do a comparison, but no dice. And o didn't realize that Fane had quit making the Medusa. I guess it'll be the Reeves if I do end up going for a Fane type in a cab or two.

And the reason I was looking for a comparison is because in the Helix, I like to use a Fane HiWatt IR with a V30 IR. I really like that paring, and since I'm currently awash in V30s, I just need to find a suitable substitute for the old Fane HiWatt that was used for that IR. That way, if I get back into a band, my direct/FOH tone will be the same as, or close enough to, what I have in my cab(s).
