It's a happy afternoon enjoying a beer I can drink, sanding and remembering the joys of an old cassette.

Re: Refin Begins

I actually haven't done any refinishing jobs since my last big project, its bugging me. I got a customer job in at the moment This dude wants his mg car printed on his guitar. I have finished the artwork i just need to make the fabric and print it.

After thats done i have a spray job to do on a tele for a friend. :headbang:

I like the refinishing threads :bigthumb:

Re: Refin Begins

I can save you much work with a heat gun and a putty knife.

Thanks. I've seen that done as well but I'm only roughing it up and smoothing out some crappiness in the original paint. Although while I was sanding I did consider adding a strat type forearm contour, I just don't have the tools to really do all I want yet.

Re: Refin Begins

I assume you are using the existing paint, as opposed to stripping and refinishing. I just did the same with my bandmate's Epi Wilshire. It's a good idea when refinishing poly to just leave the original finish intact and go over it.

Here is a hint: use mineral spirits/turpentine/paint thinner instead of water. Water can get into screw holes, etc., and irreversibly swell the wood. Besides, being somewhat oily, it's a better lubricant anyhow (smoother - catches up less). Also, I'd highly recommend using a sanding block for the "meat" of the sanding, and just doing touch ups with your fingers.

Re: Refin Begins

Great advise to use mineral spirits. The water issue is partly why taped up so much. I will do that from now on. I try to use minimal water and wipe up often. It hasn't been a problem yet.

Re: Refin Begins

And after a long lay off...
I powered through this evening. Still much sanding to do and then clear and lots more sanding but I think it'll be what I want.

Re: Refin Begins

Nice. I got that same color Charvel since it was on sale and sounded great, but hated the shade of purple. Keep posting, let us know what paint you use

I'm trying a different paint this time. It's Montana paint. A German grafitti paint. I like to try different stuff and liked these colors. I difficult to work with for sure as it doesn't go on very smooth and doesn't sand very easily either. I usually use Duplicolor. If it proves to be to much of a ***** I still have a nice base of poly to return to and start over. Thanks for looking.

Wet sand it back with 600 and some kerosene.

I should be able to get some time with it again tomorrow. Sanding and I are great friends. I started with 600 on the red coat and after 20 minutes of careful sanding I still had slight orange peel so I went to 400. This stuff just wasn't meant to be used this way, but I'm down for a good fight now and then.
