Refinishing a guitar

If I were to refinish my guitar, what would the process be? My guitar is satin-finished, but it's natural under the satin.

Here's a pic, if it helps

Re: Refinishing a guitar

Oh yeah... The plan.

The plan at this point is to refinish in white. I want the neck to be satin, for smooth playing like it has now, but the rest to have that shine to it. I plan on doing all white and then doing some painting on the white. No bursts or anything like that.

Re: Refinishing a guitar

Why would you refinish that beauty?

Because I've had this design in my head for a finish on an explorer for half the school year. And also, it would just be special to me. I've already gone through so much to make that guitar what I want sound wise. It looks good; refinishing it would just be special to me. It's my first good guitar.

I'm not entirely sure myself, but at this point in time, after seeing all the work here and just watching Crusty go, I just... want to? I love the way it looks now, but for some reason I don't think I'd miss it.

Now you guys are making me unsure about a decision I've had in my head for a month now. :eyecrazy:

Re: Refinishing a guitar

If it was a bolt on neck, I would say go for it but since its a setneck guitar it would be harder to refinish.

that just my 0.02 cents though.

Good point. That makes refinishing the neck a problem. It's just not worth it. It you want a white guitar, buy one.

Re: Refinishing a guitar

If dominus says don't refinish it, damn!

Legend has it that dominus once refinished his dog in candy apple red when it made the mistake of holding still for 3 seconds while eating.

Took 3 cans of paint too. Guy is huge!

Re: Refinishing a guitar

If you try refinishing that guitar in gloss white, as a novice you will probably end up spending enough money to get you halfway to another similar quality guitar in the finish you want, plus you'll waste countless hours of time that you could have spent practicing, learning theory, or working to earn money towards the second guitar.

Re: Refinishing a guitar

Firat of all - regarding the neck. What a bunch of pusses; use some fricken tape. Jeez.

However - I am in agreement that:
a) Don't refin this
b) Pure white may not be a great first choice

I have never repainted a guitar, but I used to build a lot of models as a kid/young adult. Clean white is NOT the easiest thing to do right.

But do a search in the guitar room for Dominus posts. You'll find "His current method"

Re: Refinishing a guitar

Quick question to the experienced refinishers: why is white hard?

I am planning to do a white finish on my home build (see sig), but not a glossy or candy coat - more of an open grained finish like this:
