refretting

What exactly is this? Can you have an entirely new fretboard glued to your neck without changing the neck? Mine is an '89 and has taken some wear (it's a rosewood american strat if that matters).

Re: refretting

You can have a new fretboard installed, but you´re probably looking for a refret or a fret dress.

A dress is basically a "re-leveling" of the fret tops to put the playing surface back on the same plane, and a re-rounding of the tops afterwards.

A refret is the same thing, but the frets are pulled out and replaced with new ones first. In this process the fretboard itself is also leveled (if necessary), eliminating any inconsistencies. A refret is recommended if :

1. You want a different size of frets (usually larger)
2. The neck has other structural problems such as a hump or a rising tongue
3. The Frets are so worn out that after dressing it won´t play comfortably anymore.
