Regular screws vs Allen screws vs Rails?

Re: Regular screws vs Allen screws vs Rails?

Rails allow you to bend a note and the string will always be over a polepiece as the whole rail is the polepiece...so there's no drop off at all. The drawback is that you can't adjust a rail up or down under the B string if that string seems out of balance with the other strings, as it usually does. As for the diff between slot head screws and allen screws: I think there is a tonal diff, but I'm not sure how to describe it. Maybe the field is a little more dispersed with the allen screws? The tone seems a little less focused, less steely and more spread out with the allen screws. The harmonics seem to have a little more space to thier tone with the allen screws. But I could be wrong about that as I've never had two identical pickups to compare with one having slot head polepieces and one having allen screws.

Hey Lew, do you have any idea where I could get some hex screws for a Custom-5?

Since they are not magnets, maybe a great hardware store would have them? Maybe you could remove one slot head polepiece, take it to a great hardware store and buy some allen head screws of the same thread and size. You'd want to make sure they'd stick to a magnet tho...that they had iron in them so they'd become magnetized when put in your pickup. I'm just making up an answer! I don't really know. (LOL!) Lew

Could you order allen screws from SD? Or could you ask for your pup with allen screws instead of it's default without it becoming a Custom Shop thing (and Custom Shop price)? Maybe it would only cost $20, like it does for changing the mag.

I did put some allen in a C5 and it changed it completly:more tight but still big bass , more gain and harmonics everywhere . And i did the same to my Screaming demon neck , as i found that the allen screws from a Humbucker from Hell are better than the black allen of the demon, and it improved it as well .
