Removing Pickup Cover and Install It Again

I want to swap pickups on my Les Paul.

I can't decide nickel covered pickup or zebra Pickups.

I'm thinking buying zebra Pickups and nickel pickup covers for them, then using them with covers however I want to use them without covers whenever I want later.

I've heard that a glue should be used for installing pickup covers to prevent noise.

Is it possible to remove off the pickup cover again after using some time?

Would it be any glue remnant?

Would the pickups cosmetically intact?

Personally, I've found you don't really have to secure the cover to the pickup. They've fit snugly in my experience. No noise or anything to speak of. Take that with a grain of salt, though. That's just my experience.

Re: Removing Pickup Cover and Install It Again

I put masking tape on top of the pickup and than use a little bit of silicone on top of the tape. I press the cover on and it will remove just fine in the future if you wish to take it off.

i usually just press fit the cover on

That is one of the dumbest things I havecseen in quite a while. Do not use pocketknives on pickups! You can cut the fine wires that make the pickups work, or the fingers that make the guitar work. Seriously, WTF?

Re: Removing Pickup Cover and Install It Again

I actually did that, haha! The cover could be a heat sink so heating it with a soldering gun may not work.

Don't use a knife to cut the steak you're eating! You can cut your fingers with it! ;)

Re: Removing Pickup Cover and Install It Again

I think I remember being told soldering guns can create strong electromagnetic fields when the trigger is pulled. Perhaps not the best tool for use on pickups. I believe a soldering pencil is preferable. But I could be wrong.

Call me silly but Zebras look badass on a Les Paul..
I have a thing for Lesters with Zebra pickups..

This post is seriously silly.

Pocketknives work very well to cut through the solder easily. Used them many times. I have had the skill to do that safely when I was about 8. You use basic knife safety and you are fine.

With all the mag swapping I've done, I rarely solder PU covers back on, not knowing if that magnet is going to be 'the one' or not. If there's some wax or electrical tape on the top of the coils, the cover is usually held pretty snug. I've never had a problem with covers coming loose or with feedback on stage.

If you still have some wax on the bobbins, a once over with a lighter has cured any feedback issues I have had. (Then again, I suspect I tend to use more gain and thus be more prone to microphonic feedback)
