Removing Pickups without soldering

Unfortunately I may have to sell my strat and make do with just my acoustic. I'd like to part it out, but have not learned to solder. I want to remove the TB-5 and two SSL-5's to sell separately. If I just snip the pickup wires will that effect the value of the pickups?

Re: Removing Pickups without soldering

You can cut them at the ends where they are soldered to ; that should not affect the pickups at all nor the value. Are you planning to sell the Strat with the stock pickups placed in?

Re: Removing Pickups without soldering

Thanks. I put a new neck on it a few months back, its 2005 MIM body with a 2011 neck with locking tuners, so I will probably sell that off also. I don't want to pay to have the old pickups put back in so I'd probably just try and sell the body and throw in the stock pickups along with it. The body has a new Callaham block and saddles so may remove that also. I hate to do it, but I might have to.

Re: Removing Pickups without soldering

In your case I would recommend selling everything separately just so you could get the most money possible. It's not a complete guitar or even a stock loaded body. Plus you have high quality parts like Callaham which might not even add much value to the body if you sell it together.

I don't want to blow up! :eyecrazy:maybe I'll use that as an excuse not to sell it. Its taken me years to upgrade and I love the guitar. If I can make it past Christmas without selling it, I should be able to keep it. If I do I'm definitely going to sell everything separately.

Re: Removing Pickups without soldering

Soldering it out is pretty trivial and irons aren't expensive, any reason why you don't want to solder?

Re: Removing Pickups without soldering

Diagonal cutters do the trick when snipped right at the solder joint. You can lose a couple of mm of wire length.

But if they have the braided sheath as ground and it lays across one of the pots, you'll need to de-solder, which is as complicated as pulling a bit on the wire you want to remove with one hand as you heat the joint with the other hand.

I would like to and had planned on learning how to solder, but the only reason I may be selling the guitar is that I'm having some financial problems. I suppose a cheap iron would be worth the investment and I'd recoup the cost when I parted out the guitar, but I didn't really want to spend much since I don't have much. I'm hoping I can make I can keep it, but am close to having to part with it.

There must be a forum member nearby who can help. That person might also be in the market for some of the Strat parts.
