Removing the covers

What is involved in removing the covers from a hum' pickup.
My one seems to be welded at both ends, I know I can easily cut through this, but, what will it be like underneath? and how will it affect the tone, oh, it's a Gibson 57 re-issue.

Re: Removing the covers

Thanks for the link, I did a search and came up with nothing, also, my question was more to do with tone/visuals than actual how to.

Re: Removing the covers

Well, it's not welded on, but soldered. If you've got a 45 watt soldering iron, that task is over. Now, with the visuals, you can expect double black, since that's the standard for Gibson these days. Tone wise, you'll lose some bass, and gain some high end. Make the pickup alot clearer if you're using it in the bridge.

Re: Removing the covers

Thanks for that, must say, I am surprised that I would loose bass end, as I don't actually want that, I will leave it as it is. I am busy testing this pickup in my guitar over the JB that was in there, Definatley a smoother pickup, as it should be, with around half the output, I doesn't have a sharp high end, and the bass is nice and full without being muddy, my next test is ??????, will have to wait and see how the finances go.
Thanks again.

Re: Removing the covers

You might not loose as much bass end as you think you will. But, it will clear up the treble alot. Most people wont notice a difference between a cover on and off, so it's mostly about looks.

Re: Removing the covers

You won't lose any bass. Maybe because the pickup will sound a little brighter, Bean is perceiving that change of balance between treble and bass as a loss of bass rather than an increase in treble...

I've been taking the covers off of humbuckers since the 60's.
