Repair Blonde Tolex

Re: Repair Blonde Tolex

Depends what you mean by "repair".
Those are Very Small blemishes.....most guys would not even worry about it, just normal usage.
If you drop some glue (white...super...try some different stuff) in each dimple, it will help to keep the cancer from spreading.
good luck

Re: Repair Blonde Tolex

Step one is to clean any dirt on the Tolex. Windex and a toothbrush, rinse it well and let it thoroughly dry.

Where there is a gouge that removed the vinyl, take the back of the cab off and remove a small piece of the vinyl where it wraps over the back. You can use tissue paper to trace the size and shape of the gouge and cut it out with x-acto knife. You can actually remove several small pieces off the inside of the back, and you should be able to make several filler patches. Where you cut the small pieces of vinyl off the back, use a bit of super glue to seal the edge. Once you've cut and shaped the patch, use super glue to glue it in place.

I did this with one of my blond Mesas, and you can't tell where the patches are unless you are right on top of them.

With black Tolex, like on a Fender, use silicone windshield sealer in the black color on the tiny gouges and cuts. As it dries you can use your fingernail to give it some pebble grain. And as it dries, lightly touch the sealer giving it more of a matte finish. Black is so much easier to work with than blond. I like using the black silicone sealer on black amps--it can make repairs invisible.

Sometimes you will have a cut in the Tolex and the cut edge will kinda roll under. You'll need to get those edges flattened out before you glue the edges down. You'll need to weight it down, or hold it until the super glue sets.

With a little practice you can make your cab look almost new.

Re: Repair Blonde Tolex

Has anyone tried using that leather repair stuff they make for couches and car upholstery? It would of course be smooth in that one spot unless you really took the time to try to make the texture match up.

Re: Repair Blonde Tolex

Wow, thanks for the detailed and informative reply Bill! I will definitely try this.

Incedentally, I have tried to repair the blemishes with the 3M "Vinyl & Leather Repair Kit". I had a really hard time matching the color of the blonde tolex with this, I'm sure it *can* be done, but I was not skilled enough to sucessfully do it. I think these kits would work ok for patching up black tolex however, as there would be no mixing involved. Autozone carries them. All in all, I think Bill's suggestion on black tolex repair would work better, and is likely cheaper, than the 3M kit.

Thanks again Bill!
