Repair, ground a pickup with metal cover

Almost Never

I have a Old Kraftsman guitar with two pickups. The bridge works. The neck came out from the metal cover, seeming to be held with wax. Testing it on a meter, it seems to function. A wire connects to the cover under the cover. The pickup has two leads, and the case itself has a lead. Can I glue to cover to the pickup and ground both the cover and the pickup to the same pot, or do I not get how these pickups work?

Re: Repair, ground a pickup with metal cover

Normally the bass plate is grounded and you put a couple of blobs of solder between the cover and bass plate to hold in place. Look on YouTube for videos to install humbucker covers. Ideally you want to put masking tape over the bobbins and over the slugs that the cover goes over, unless all the slugs are exposed and apply some rubberised glue Luke UHU craft glue to the masking tape then press the cover on. This will stop the cover from squealing or becoming microphonic. Then a blob of solder to help hold in place and complete the grounding via the bass plate.

But if the case has a lead then you can ground that to the pot but if the cover isn't soldered it will come off again

Unless you want to be able to reverse phase you can just put metal cover, metal baseplate and one end of the coil combo on the same ground wire.
