Replace neck on a Dinky with... ?

Let's say I got my hands on a cool Dinky body, cheap. So now I'm looking for a neck for it, but don't want a Jackson neck (which is easy to find on ebay.)

Are there builders who can make a neck that will fit the Dinky neck pocket? From the specs, it doesn't look like Warmoth necks will fit, though I'm waiting to hear back from them. Other options?

The idea is that I'd like to put a chunky fat neck on this slick like Dinky. Crazy, but true.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Check with Musikraft. They make necks with the Jackson 2 1/4" wide heel, 22 fret.

You'd have to see if you need the 24 fret overhang, if it's flush with the heel, etc... It's alot easier to just get a jackson neck on ebay

I thought the Dinly used a standard "strat" neck pocket?

Thanks for the responses.

Aryton: that would sure makes things easy. But I think it's not the case, though I am no expert at these kind of things. The specs I have for the body from the seller are: "needs a 24 fret, 25:5" scale neck. 2 1/4" neck heel."

Warmoth's specs for their Strat replacement necks are here. I think the important info is :

"the critical dimensions for guitars are: Neck pocket depth 5/8", length 3", and width 2-3/16". Scale length (measure from nut to 12th fret x 2) is 25-1/2", distance from nut to 12th fret, 12 3/4", to the heel (not extended fingerboard) is 18-7/16". Distance from heel to midpoint of bridge saddle adjustment is 7-1/8"."

So, please correct me if I'm wrong, the Dinky neck pocket would be over-wide by 1/16" for a Warmoth neck. I got that by comparing the Dinky's 2 1/4" neck heel to Warmoth's 2-3/16" width.

That means Warmoth necks are not a solution, no?

jmh151: I know a Jackson neck on ebay would be so easy - you're right! I just have this crazy idea of the fat neck and skinny guitar. I'm sure a psychiatrist would have a field day with that. :eyecrazy: I'm waiting to hear back now from Musikraft - thanks for the tip.

Re: Replace neck on a Dinky with... ?

i have 2 90's Performer Dinkies with 24 fret necks... one neck is a bit of a wreck... if i could i'd of bought a replacement a long time ago... seems Jackson necks only work on Jackson guitars... I know Warmoth was taking specs on Jackson necks to study weather or not they could offer a replacement neck to fit all the customers they have asking for necks to fit Jackson guitars... i guess there is too many sizes to bother...

i may just make my own custom home made neck for my Jackson....

Well I guess the best way to tell is just put a ruler on it.

Probably true! That means committing to the body before I really know if I can find the kind of neck I want.

One of the builders I've contacted thinks he might be able to make a neck that will fit. :) But he can't do a Jackson slanted headstock.

Warmoth could build me a Jackson-style neck.:) But will it fit? :confused:The Warmoth specs indicate that one of their necks would be 1/16" narrower than the 2 1/4" heel quoted by the person selling the body. I wonder:

1. did the seller really accurately measure down the 16th of an inch? A quick glance at a ruler could look like 1/4" - you'd have to take your time to note it was actually 3/16".

2. if they are mismatched by 1/16", is that a deal-breaker? Would a good tech be able to compensate for that small of a gap? (Am waiting to hear back from my tech!)

Played a bunch of Dinkys today at Sam Ash. Most had that classic skinny, wide, compound Jackson neck. But one of them had a decidedly thicker neck! It was really nice, had me considering buying it just for neck (it was used at a good price.) Interesting. :scratchch

check with tommy at USACG, he has made some great necks for projects of mine.

OK, I assumed you already had the body. Depending on the price, you could just pick up a import Charvel (model series) or build your own from Musikraft, Warmoth, or USACG.

Right on. He is the one I mentioned who thought he might be able to do it. Seem like really nice folks at USACG. I think he's still considering the feasibility, and I hope to hear from him again soon.

Aryton: you're right that there are others way to go. I just love the size/shape/feel of Dinkys, and the finish on this one is awesome. What other body designs out there compare to a Dinky?

thanks for the responses.

Re: Replace neck on a Dinky with... ?

It would fit- just not good. If you saw EVH- Frankenstrat, he made it fit. The body originally had a Fender size neck pocket. Then he routed the neck pocket to 2 1/4" to made room for a Charvel neck. Then when we went wit Kramer, he mounted a fender speck neck, leaving a big gab in the neck pocket.

To prevent neck shifting, he installed 2 additional wood screws under the neck plate that you can't see. This kept the neck stable enough.
