Replacement for Jackson J-100

I like the jangly tones, almost glassy, of the J-100, but cannot stand the noise. Any ideas for a good replacement that fits those slots? I was thinking SSL-5, but...

Thanks!
Paul

Is it for the middle position? SSL-1 would be good for a glassy sound.

Re: Replacement for Jackson J-100

Thanks Varg. Yes, it would be for the middle. Charvel made these to fit the Jackson pups of the day, which did not have that extended wiring tab protruding from center of one side of the pup. From the image of the SSL-5 (and a few others) I don't see that lip, which the SSL-1 has unfortunately.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I could move the neck pup if I like the new one better. So, essentially, I'm fine with putting one of these in either position. To be honest, the J100 is insanely noisy, but sounds pretty good in the neck pos..

Ah right, yes the SSL-5 then. I wouldnt put a single coil in the neck of a superstrat though, unless you don't use it much for metal type solos.

Re: Replacement for Jackson J-100

So, you're thinkiing stacked coils only for the neck? I'm exploring various genres of music right now, so I'm looking for that vintage but decent output sound. The STK-S4 is insanely intriguing, but I'm not sure how I'd direct mount that little guy aside from drilling new and smaller holes and using screws that slip right through the threads on that pickup. Can the cover be removed?

Wow, the SSL-5 is sweet!

Yeah baby, just ordered an SSL-5. It's a amazing what good tone and good playing can do to market a pickup. Wait, that was a Splawn video wasn't it? Now I can play around with the positioning of the other J100.

I wonder if they make a low wattage head...

I'm surprised you didn't go for the STK-S6 or SSL-6 instead of the SSL-5 (Hum-cancelling version of the SSL-6, which is the flat radius instead of traditional stagger of the SSL-5). Unless you've got a small radius fretboard, the flat radius gives better string balance. Though some people love staggered FOR the uneveess. Of course, a lot of those are Hendrix tone-chasers who should be using a left-hand stagger on their right-handed guitar.

I'd have suggested it in this thread, but I figured you'd already read the other thread about Jacksons you posted in. Though given your tone description, I'd have figured you'd go for the STK-S4 (or SSL-2 or SSL-1).

Stacks are single coils, as far as tonal applications go (there's some dispute over how close they are in tone, I feel that the difference in tone is almost entirely from the lack of noise in the newer designs like the Stack Plus line). A lot of people don't like single coils for lead tones with heavy distortion, but many of them haven't tried hot single coils, either...

Anyways, alternate tone for an SC-sized slot would be a single-sized humbucker, still a side by side humbucker, just narrower. Like the Hot or Cool Rails pickups, or the Little '59, Little JB, etc. They get an odd sound, with a focus a bit more like a single than a full-sized HB, but tone a bit closer to the HB.

Anyways, hope what you ordered works out for you (or that you are somewhere the 21-day guarantee is available). Please follow up with comments on how it worked (or didn't) for you!

Re: Replacement for Jackson J-100

Thanks for the response. I'm bouncing back and forth at the JCF forum as well on this topic (trying to drive everyone crazy equally :))

I agree, the STK-S4 is VERY appealing to me, and it seems, I may have to order both. It's quite possible that I could try both within the 21 day period.

How would you suggest I direct mount the STK-S4 though?

Thanks,
Paul

Re: Replacement for Jackson J-100

Direct mount as in no springs, direct to wood? I've never messed with that sort of setup. I tend to tweak pickup heights as I mess with different playing styles. Especially on the middle single coil that's the only one in my RG570. If I'm digging in a lot, hitting that pickup's polepieces is really annoying.

Or just a no pickguard/pick rings situation? That's pretty easy to figure out if you've done any pickup swapping. Just put the new pickup in with the spring & screw set the same way as it was on the one you remove. =)

For the middle, if the Custom (whether staggered, flat or stack plus) doesn't work, and the STK-S4 turns out too low powered, next one I'd check out would be the STK-S7 Hot Vintage Stack Plus (still very much a vintage strat tone, just a moderate overwind of the sort that SRV tone-chasers who don't like big strings tend to like). A bit warmer and hotter, but not nearly as much so as the Custom strat models.

Re: Replacement for Jackson J-100

Hey thanks. THe problem with the STK's is that they seem to be made for a pick guard, whereas the screw penetrates the PG and winds through the thread beneath the surface of the PG.

My guitar uses a direct mount method, looks like this:

So, how do I get screws through the mounting threads on the STK models and then into the body? Notice how the SSL models just have holes through which one needs to pass the screws through, and into the body. I believe someone mentioned using smaller screws that slide through those threads on the STKs and directly into the body. However, are those covers on the STK models removable?
