I would be much obliged if I could get some advice on a what would be a good replacement speaker choice for a 73 Deluxe Reverb.

thanks!

Re: replacement speaker for 73 Deluxe

Depend's what your going for? There's a good post in the vault that sums up
the different speakers. For the best direct replacement I'd go with a Weber
12F150.

Re: replacement speaker for 73 Deluxe

If you have a link to the post, I would really appreciate it. I looked for some posts in the vault and most of the recommendations were for celestions or other british types. I am looking for a speaker with headroom and more of a smooth and silky sound with some low end punch rather than a gritty and crunchy sound with a lot of high end. I've checked out eminence's website but they have sooooo many choices, that I can't make up my mind.

O.K. I think I know what speaker your talking about.:D Go to
http://www.tedweber.com/
and check out his Cailfornia series speaker. It's his take on the the old JBL's.
I have one In my Princeton reverb and love it. It's rated at 80 watts so you
will have plenty headroom with a 22 watt Deluxe. It dosen't color your sound.

just went there and checked it out......alnico or ceramic?
Well 1st thing, I'm sure you noticed a big price difference. :laugh2: Alnico
is a more expencive matrial. I believe the original JBL's where Alnico? This is
explained in better detail on the weber site in the Q&A section.( I know
that site can be a pain to navagate) So I'll give you my take on the two.
Alnico will be softer and a bit more warmer and musicial sounding. Where
cereamic has more punch and headroom. I have a ceramic in my Princeton.
But if money is not a factor... I would have got the Alnico. :)

Re: replacement speaker for 73 Deluxe

I have an old Fender branded Utah from the early 70s. Very warm and smooth. These were in lots of vintage Fender amps. Very nice sounding speaker, in perfect working order. I am not useing right now. Make me an offer if interested.

Re: replacement speaker for 73 Deluxe

I have a 65 non reverb Deluxe amp i have been toying with the idea i should try a different speaker as well and put the original aside for save keeping.... But also part of me thinks i should keep it original.... Well as original as it can be as all the caps have been replaced....

Re: replacement speaker for 73 Deluxe

Don't be afraid of the Celestion G12H30. It's the best speaker in a Deluxe Reverb that I have ever used and you can play anything on it: Jazz, Blues, Rock...anything. Deep, full tone with smooth highs and it'll add clean headroom to your DR and help keep it from farting out because it's a very efficient speaker.

If you want something buttery smooth, the Jensen Reissue C12N is worth considering...but the Celestion G12H30 is the one I use in both of my Deluxe Reverbs, and I'm a blues/rock player and need a versatile tone. Lew

Gerald Weber recommends doing this .... use a replacement, but keep the original speaker aside for resale value when the time comes

that's what I did with my '56 Deluxe ... I have the original Jensen P12R in a box, but the amp sounds great with a replacement speaker.

Yes, it's 8 ohms. Here's is some specs for your amp.BF Deluxe

Thanks..

They did not make many of the BF non reverb Deluxe units like mine yet i find that the vintage books say the Reverb unit is more is worth more... I agree the reverb units sound better but the nonreverb models are rarer....
