I've had my Wolfgang for 4 months and I just dont like the pickups.(Too harsh) :smack: I'm probally going to go with the Jb-Jazz combo. My question is for those who have changed PUs in thier Wolfgangs. How did you modify the pickups to fit into the wolfgang and get proper height? Thx

I use medium hard foam for pickup height adjustment, and the feet you'll have to mod, or can you order them with triangular feet??
An remember that the legs have to be short.

Re: Replacing PUs in a Wolfgang

i believe that you need short legs for the wolfgang and i dont think you can order them with triangular legs so youll have to modify them yourself or have some one do it for ya

Re: Replacing PUs in a Wolfgang

for mine i took a drill bit that was a bit larger than the hight edjustment screw and just made the whole larger. thats the way i think its supposed to be done....(hopefully)

For those that have changed thier PUs on a wolfgang, whats your favorite PU combination?

Re: Replacing PUs in a Wolfgang

I've swapped many a pickup in and out of my '99 Standard. First, let me say that you'll most likely find the Jazz neck too bright and trebly in the Wolfgang. Depending on whether you prefer brighter or warmer pickups, the JB may also be too bright. The Blues Trembucker is my absolute favorite bridge pickup. It's warmer than the C5, Demon, '59, or Jazz, with a nice balanced EQ and medium output. The Custom Custom also works well, but it didn't have enough bass for my tastes. In the neck, I like the Alnico II Pro best. If you're interested in swapping pickup magnets, you can come up with a whole bunch of new combinations that sound really nice in a Wolfgang.

As far as modifying the baseplate, you'll have to do it yourself. Duncans aren't available with the oval mounting tabs, so you have a couple options here. One is to use a Dremel tool to cut off the excess metal on the tabs. The other is to use an electric drill with a grinding bit attached to grind the tabs into an oval shape. For the mounting screws, you can either cut the Duncan screws so that they're the same length as the stock screws, or you can slightly enlarge the holes on the mounting tabs and then use the stock Wolfgang pickup screws. I used a drill bit that was the same size as the hole, and just shaved away a very small amount of metal. This will enlarge the hole just enough to allow the stock screws to fit, and you'll still be able to use the Duncan screws if you want to use the pickup in another guitar someday. Don't enlarge the holes too much, or you won't be able to use that pickup in another guitar without using a washer of some sort. Of course, all this modification will void the 21 day exchange policy, so it's a good idea to pick the right set of pickups the first time. My vote goes to the Blues Trembucker/Alnico II Pro combo.

Re: Replacing PUs in a Wolfgang

I've replaced my Wolfie with a C5 & CC in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. I liked the 59 in the neck, and personal preference was the CC cause of the mids. I've put the originals back in tho cause playing the whole Wolfy/5150 combo really does sound great.

Re: Replacing PUs in a Wolfgang

Sofar I use APH-1 in the neck and a Demon in the bridge.
I have also used two 59's in it, also a great classic sounding setup.
I am probally getting a APH-1 or Seth fro the bridge soon, along with a EVH :)
This guitar sounds good no matter what you do, lots of sparkle and life.

I trimmed an old spring down to 2-3 coils and that worked for mine. I also have trimmed down the rubber spacers, but the springs seem to work better. I had a 59/Jb in mine and it was still bright to my ears. I pulled the Jb and put a C5 in and still didn't like it. After some research, I ended up with a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck and an Air Zone in the bridge. Both pickups have the lower mids boosted and the treble lowered. This is my favorite combo for this guitar. The Air Buckers sound very cool in that guitar and also didnt have to special order legs for the pickup as the DiMarzios fit the pickup rout of the guitar. If you are going to use Duncans, you'll need a dremel to trim the legs on the pickup to fit the guitar which is a mod and probably will void your exchange warranty if you arent satisfied. If you go with DiMarzio you don't have to "drill" your guitar or any other mod to your guitar. Granted you may have to push the wood screw thru the mounting legs, but it will go and I don't believe that will void any exchange policy.

My vote is for the Air Norton/Air Zone combo (be sure that they are F-spaced). They Rock!!
