Replacing SH5 in a Flying V

When I put this pickup in the bridge of my Dean V Black Gold, I wanted to play 80's heavy/hard rock. Think about Accept, Ratt, Def Leppard, DIO, Dokken, Ozzy Osbourne, 80's Black Sabbath... I wanted that cutting tight and trebly sound at the same time. 4 days ago I bought a Gibson SG with P90's, and I realized that the SH5 in my Dean sounds very very bassy, with almost no treble and cut. When I play the first strings the sound has no deffinition, and all the sound is a ball of bass.

I want the opposite thing... So I thought about the SH6. Will that pickup give me the sound I'm after? Another option? Have in mind that I also want a versatile guitar, because I play a lot of 70's Rock and Hard Rock as well. I play through a Marshall DSL1H with a WGS Retro 30 speaker (Vintage V30 sound).

SH-4? Isn't that what Rhoads and DeMartini used?

It's not very tight, though, so maybe a Full Shred might work better. I heard it's a brighter, tighter Custom

Thanks for your reply. It can be a good option, but maybe it's too modern sounding for the 70's Hard Rock I also play, isn't it?

Vivian Campbell used it when he toured with Whitesnake. It will give you 80s, I think, but not sure about 70s

Re: Replacing SH5 in a Flying V

the distortion in a flying v will definitely give you treble and cut with tight bass.

The full shred wind is based on the Custom series wind. So it has a lot of the same kind of characteristics in terms of eq, openness, versatility. It's a lot tighter than the custom and perhaps a little less bass. The custom does have lots of beef and balls in the low end and is a bit higher output than the FS. If you want to retain that sorta modern PAF voicing and an output level that can cover a lot of ground from blues to metal and everything in between, I highly recommend the full shred.

The SH6 is higher output than either the FS or the Custom. It's also got a lot of beef in the lows and low mids, but it's tighter and more controllable with picking hand technique than the Custom is. It's also got screaming upper midrange which provides the bulk of the pickup's articulation and ability to cut through a mix. The highs also cut through nicely but without being too harsh or obnoxious.

You might also want to look into the black winter. It's received lots of favorable reviews that claim it's very versatile tonally.

Also perhaps the Pegasus 6string version.

Thanks guys. I think I'll get the Distortion, since I've read that it can be also good for 70's Hard Rock.

Anyway, more replies are appreciated!!

Re: Replacing SH5 in a Flying V

I have experience with the Custom, Full Shred, JB, Distortion, and Black Winter.

I think that the Distortion or Black Winter would work best for what you described. The Black Winter is more even sounding, and the Distortion has bigger lows and a more piercing high end. I would also say that the Distortion tends to sound more saturated, and the Black Winter is a bit "drier" sounding. I prefer the Black Winter for clean and lower gain sounds to the Distortion.
