Replacing the BB Pro bridge pickup!

So guys.....I want to replace the bright edgy Gibson bridge pickup. First I wanted to apologize if I have been apain in the neck in the past or indecisive.
I meant no ill will by any of it....

With my new LP Studio Deluxe I have spent some good time with the guitar.
I want low to med output with rolled off highs but smooth and still a tight low end.

Looking at these:
Gibson 57
Duncan Hybrid or JB
Duncan Brobucker
Duncan AII Pro
Rio BBQ
DImarzio Air Zone
DiMarzio 36th PAF

LP Studio Deluxe and mostly rock and hard rock.
Bogner Shiva, PWE and modded Dual Rec.

Suggestions?

Re: Replacing the BB Pro bridge pickup!

I had the A2 slash and have a similar amps/guitar modern rock/classic rock taste.

IMO, the Dimarzio 36th is my current favorite. It's a very tight but very warm and open bridge. Great vintage vibe for Zeppelin stuff but can cross into STP/Tool with no problem. It has the sweetness of the A2 and the performance/presence/push of an A5. It's my perfect paf, for my style and I've played a lot of em. That being said, i do like the BB Pro set as well...

I think the custom hybrid would be cool (getting one soon myself.

The A2 mag, in general, doesn't have a tight bass response.

Re: Replacing the BB Pro bridge pickup!

i have a brobucker, a2p and dimarzio PAF pro. last week i tried a JB in a guitar shop and i think the JB is the best in terms of versatility, clarity, balance, attack and tight bottom end. it's the HB pickup that seems to do everything perfectly. i agree with tonaholic about a2 pickups lacking the oomph that an a5 pickup can provide. the brobucker and PAF pro sound a bit similar but the dimarzio has more "compression" and sounds a bit bland when clean. the bro sounds more "organic" or "transparent". the best way i can describe it is when i play clean and low volume through an amp, the SDs mimics the sound of the guitar acoustically where the dimarzios cut out some of the sparkle to the amp that i hear from the guitar.

Re: Replacing the BB Pro bridge pickup!

Hard to beat a good ol 57 classic with a 500K V/T. And I really really dig the A2P SLASH set. Keep 'em both set kinda low in the rings ( the key with 57C..up high like most people set them -and/or with 300K vol pot- and they get muddy and sloppy sounding)

A2 mag, Poly wire...may not be "cool" with the hardcore PAF crowd, but I really dig it. I have no issues with "tightness", but I have a tight speaker (V30) and amp (HK). So it balances out well enough. I can get away with Maiden and (old) Metallica. If you need modern metal or shred tight, then yeah look elsewhere.

Actually, it's pretty easy to find a better PAF than a '57 Classic. They're middle-of-the-pack tonewise and ridiculously overpriced as aftermarket PU's, up in the boutique range, which they can't compete with.

You misunderstood me.

As a PAF it fails by the virtue of poly wire. As a pickup that delivers the sound I want, I much prefer it over any paf type Seymour or Larry makes. The Slash bridge is about the only thing that Seymour makes that I truly dig...it also has poly wire.

IOW, I prefer the late pat#/t top type tone.

Pricing is a whole other ball of wax. If i am willing to pay what they cost and it gives me the sound I want, how is that overpriced? Its amuch better value to buy a 57c for $130 bucks than spending $80 bucks on a 59, or PAF 36th that do not deliver the goods for me.

Re: Replacing the BB Pro bridge pickup!

Why not just try an A2 mag in your BBP? It will reduce the output, roll off the highs, and generally give it a smoother tone and feel.

Plus it will save you $75 - 130.

Re: Replacing the BB Pro bridge pickup!

The BB Pro set sounds quite decent with an A3 in the neck paired with an UOA5 or an A2 in the bridge.

HTH,
