Repositioning neck screw holes

As part of the face lift I'm giving my Warmoth, I was going to sink the screws. I bought some nice 5/8" washers from stewmac and a 5/8" drill bit thinking I'd just sink the washers right in (the washers are thick enough to hide the screw head). Everything just arrived, and it turns out I don't quite have enough space between the neck hole and the side of the neck for everything to fit, so I guess I'm going to be repositioning the screw holes by about an eight of an inch. Can someone walk me through filling the old holes? What would I use? Will this end up being strong enough structuraly if the new holes slightly overlap the old ones?

I would fill the holes with hardwood dowel of the correct size and wood glue. Its should be strong enough! BTW, do you have a 5/8 forstner bit to properly sink the furrles? Also, a drill press is the way to go also!

^Yup, bought the bit from stewmac too. I tested it out today - it worked very nicely on some rock hard partical board so I can only imagine how well it'll work on the mahagony.

Dowel sounds reasonable. I hope I can get some small enough.

Hardwood dowels can be had at any hardware store. You can get them alot smaller than you will need so, there is nothing to worry about there. BTW, I cant remember the size hole that is currently in your strat (I think its something weird) but, you may have to go with the next largest size dowel and drill the hole out slightly. BTW, Forstner bits usually like lower speeds and light steady pressure with your drill.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. The only reservation I have about using dowels is that last time I worked with them, I found them to be harder than any other wood I've worked with before. Drilling through them at a right angle was no problem, but drilling through them lengthwise was a bitch. If I'm drilling sort of half through the dowel and half through the softer mahagony, will it cause problems for me? I don't have a drill press but I've got a nice pro level drill with a ton of power.
