Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

Alright,.. so whilst I am trying to figure out the positioning of my P-Rail pickup in relation to the neck and bridge I thought I'd ask slightly ahead of time if anyone who has any experience wiring up a guitar and soldering can assist me with a wiring diagram or advice.

Basically, the guitar will have these components..

P-Rail pickup
a tripleshot
Concentric Pots 500k
a temporary killswitch
a On/On DPDT switch to be used as a killswitch
and an input jack

So basically the idea was due to the small cavity on the guitar to use the tripleshot for changing the pickup selection, then run it through to the volume and tone, to the temp killswitch and kill switch then to the jack,..

the idea will the two killswitches is that often times I will be looping and or playing a different instrument, usually I have a patchcord with a killswitch attached but, if I become accustomed to using a killswitch and have to rely on one for the songs and I forget the patchcord or need to use a different one for some reason then I have already built in a fail safe. In regards to the temporary killswitch that is more for a stutter effect used for delay and looping..

I've never wired anything in my life and have only ever soldered a cable back onto an input jack when the connection became unreliable..

I've looked at the diagrams on the Seymour Duncan website but I'm not sure how to wire it all up, plus if certain components require them to be near in proximity to other components I want to be able to create the pickguard with that in mind..

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you kindy

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

Here are pictures of the cavity and a quickly sketched blue print showing the same...

T.K.S - Temporary Killswitch
K.S. - Kill switch
I.P. - Input Jack
C.P. T & V - Concentric Pot, Tone and Volume
P-Rail - Seymour Duncan P-Rail pickup
Fine tuning Tailp. - Schaller Finetuning Tailpiece

I'm fairly sure that this will be an easy wiring job,.. but for someone who has never done this before it seems a little daunting..
Also, I was thinking of potentially making the tone pot have a no-load option,.. but as of yet haven't decided,.. I was told you can use a little bit of clear nail polish to do it so that way in essence you are not damaging the tonepot,.. but I am unsure if there would be much benefit to doing that..

Thank you :)

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

Old Melody Maker? Not everybody gets this kind of service, but I had a spare moment and yours isn't too involved. I think what you are going for looks like this (below) but I recommend you wire it with temporary alligator clip wires and test it to make sure it does what you think it will do before soldering it all together. I left out the bridge ground - but that's pretty much compulsory in every electric guitar to avoid killing yourself. This diagram shows the outer pot as the volume and the inner (the knob on top) as the tone. I do mine this way because the outer knob is bigger and that gives me better control over the volume - which I tend to use more often. You'll have to flip the two rows of three connections if you want it the other way around. Someone else can check me if I overlooked a connection or something.

Awesome, you have no idea how much I appreciate your help..

This is like braille to me.. So truely, THANK YOU!

I am so excited to get this guitar working... before taking off the strings it was the most comfortable guitar I had every played, the neck was ridiculously easy to play compared to other guitars I've played, it's feather light and so thin..

Aligator clips, you can do that? That's ingenious... I had no idea..

Sorry, as a total novice , when you mention the bridge ground.. that is an extra wire that goes... from the pickup to the copper foil?

Thanks again..

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

Also,... what is the purpose of the capacitor? Just curious..

Thank you

I guess I should've mentioned that the Tripleshot should be in the picture but I have yet to take it out of the box due to the ton of extra wire it comes with..

(Sorry I was in a rush before work today, popped tire)

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

On every electric guitar there should be a bare wire coming from the bridge into the control cavity. That needs to be soldered to ground.

The capacitor makes one of the pots into a tone control. It filters the signal at a particular 'corner frequency' and as you turn the knob it gradually siphons off the highs down to that corner frequency when you get to 0.

Also note, the drawing is showing the concentric pot from the bottom side. So flip the pot over and wire as seen in the drawing.

Excellent.. also,.. I forgot to add the tripleshot into the picture, would that severely over complicate things?

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

I already accounted for that. The bare, black and white are what comes out of the triple shot ring. Without that you would be dealing with black, red, white, green and bare wires.

The triple shot should have came with instructions for wiring the pickup to it, so I didn't put that in.

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

Also, Very few people like the tone of a .047uf cap on the P-Rails pup tone pot. It can get pretty muddy or wet-blanket-over-the-speaker sounding. Best to try a .022uf. But you may want to try several different caps to see what you like best (.047, .022, .015, and .010 are pretty commonly used).

(I think you meant "output jack"...the pups send the signal to the amp).

Re: Request for assistance with a wiring diagram..

That's true I did mean output jack, the way my mind works I think that I need to input the jack, thus I called it input.. haha
