Returning to passives again...need high output suggestions...

Hello guys,

After been an active guy for 3 years(emg 81) I kinda missed the passive sound and I decided to give passives a go once again...
I replaced the 81 with an old Dimarzio Super 3...
And I could say that I am quite pleased with the result...
Super 3 feels nice under gain but I always was a duncan guy and I wanted to give SD a chance...

I have a pretty bright charvel star(maple neck+board, alder body, stainless steel frets) and I am looking for 1 humbucker in the bridge...

I also use a modded 2204(still on the bright side) and a 4X12 with G12H Heritage speakers(bright as well)...

The amp does not have much gain so I will need a high output suggestion...(no pedals)

I was thinking the INVADER (seems to have a similar EQ to the Super 3).

Tuning is always E and I play classic metal stuff...

So...what sould I try ???

Invader is actually pretty different from a Super 3. Might work for what you want. Its got a ton of mid push but doesnt chunk on the lows as well as some others (this can be good or bad depending on what you are after)

A more well rounded pickup is the Black winter. Its more even toned and chunks very well but can also do clean if asked to.

The Dimarzio D activators are another good choice for a modern metal tone. The X2N is just brutal and will smash the face of your 2204.

You might also do well to consider using a boost. I played for years using a TC electronic BLD just as a clean boost to drive the input of my JMP and it was just killer. They work in a way you cant do with a pickup.

The amp is modded so it can deliver good amout of gain without any boost...
Kinda like a BE mod...

I never liked the Distortion...it was way too trebly when I tested it in my guitar...treblier than the 81...

What's the difference between the invader and Super 3 ?? If pickup's sounds can be described via words...

The Invader has tons of output and tons of mids. If you want a more traditional hard rock sound on a really bright guitar, I would suggest the Custom Custom. It will clean up nicely with the volume control too.

Sorry. Any time someone mentions the Invader, I have to put in my 2-cents worth. Wire it in parallel. You get a sweet PAF-ish tone. Then use a switch to put it into series mode. Label the switch . . . "Turbo". ;)

Re: Returning to passives again...need high output suggestions...

SLUG would work. It is a custom shop pickup, but still not too pricey. A lot of what you might like about the invader with better clarity and gobs of output. Black Winter might be too tight for you, but it is all around my favorite humbucker.

JB is bright, so while I might like it, it seems in a very different direction to where you are heading.

Ummm excuse me... so which is it?

Kinda contradicting yourself there a bit, either way doesnt really matter. The sound you get from boosting an amp cannot be replicated by just added more gain to the preamp. Many modern metal players use ultra high gain amps and boost them. Instead of trying to get all your gain from one place cool metal tones can be had by using a hotter pickup, into a boost, into an preamp with multiple over driven but not saturated stages into a high headroom output stage.

Just saying instead of turning your nose up at it... if you get the chance try it. You might like it.

The Super 3 is tighter than the invader (but is still not a very tight pickup) and has more bass and less mids. Both are in the same ball park output wise. the super 3 can be dark sounding and seem clipped off where the invaders highs are pulled back but seem to extend farther even if there arent much of them.

You are right about being contradictive...
I should have state it a bit better...
I need a pickup that is not medium or low output...
The amp has plenty of gain for me,but still not the 5150 gain(so the 78 fe is not enough for me...) thats what I wanted to point out...
I have used the custom and I was happy with the output...

You are right about the Super 3 mids...I need to crank the ids to 10 to sound nice and juicy, and back off the bass and treble...
It is still very modern sounding, and I am not that used to the "dimarzio" sound...

I could give a chance to custom custom, still worried about the lack of bass and I think that the slug would be way too modern sounding...
