Rewinding Pickups

I have a Seymour Duncan SSL5-2 that was damaged and is now stripped of the wire. Does anyone here do reasonably priced rewinds that would be willing to rewind it for me?

"Reasonably priced" is so subjective. Yes there are forum members who wind pups, but if you just want the original pup restored, it would be cheaper to just buy a new pup.

Yep....a full rewind by someone charging an hourly fee will be more expensive than a machine wound pickup as part of a production line.

i agree, a used 5/2 is going to be cheaper than a rewind most likely.

If only some of the wires are stripped, it is easy to repair. Just unwind some turns until all stripped wires are away. Then resolder. If you can't do it, sell it here in the classifieds and get a new one.

This is a strange description...what happened? I know SD offers rewinds, and it is cheaper for one of their own pickups. However, they, like all other companies in CA, are shut down right now.

If you or a buddy of you know how to solder, its easy to repair a single coil pickup. Hundred turns of wire off the pickup are not doing anything tonewise.

thats true, if there is a break in one of the outer turns, you can unwind it a bit, resolder and be good.

I tried unwinding and testing and I could never determine the break. It continually tested open. It was a deep gouge. It would be a complete rewind.

Just go on until you find it! Last time i did it i took off round about .5k or 600 turns.

The Duncan Custom Shop charges $75 for rewinds BUT they give a $25 discount if it's a Duncan pickup.
Having your pickup rewound exactly to original spec (or your own custom spec) by MJ for $50 is not such a bad deal.

I agree with this. It is about the cost of one used, if you could even find a Five Two used. But also, if you wanted any change to the power level, they could add or take away windings.
