Rewire Strat Elite with P-Rails, & swapping the push-push bypass with on-off-on split
Finally completed a mod that uses a P-rail instead of a shawbucker on a Fender Elite, and gets rid of the push-push that sent humbucker straight to output jack and instead uses on-off-on as a coil split that allows: Slug coil only, Full Humbucker, Rail coil only. Here's how it works:
For those wanting to do this, I finally figured it out (NOTE: this does away with the function of the push-push bypassing everything and just taking humbucker straight to output jack):
1) Get rid of the push-push switch and get a SPDT on-OFF- on switch (or dpdt on-off-on, but you'll only need one side) mini toggle switch
2) Connect the white (hot) wire from the output jack to the center lug (wiper) of the S-1 (remove the current wire from that center lug that goes to the old push-push)
3) I use the P-rails by Seymour Duncan as humbucker so THESE WIRE COLORS ARE FOR Seymour Duncan . . . you'll need to convert for Fender, etc. humbuckers
a) Disconnect all of the humbucker wires from the push-push, and from any ground spots on pots etc.
b) Connect Black wire from humbucker to top lug of on-off-on, then connect the wire that goes to the 5 way super switch to that same lug
c) Connect the Red and White wires from humbucker to the center lug
d) Connect the Green and Bare wires to the bottom lug, then connect that same lug to a ground (back of a pot)
That's it. Use a multimeter in continuity mode to check your connections. Don't forget to use alligator clips as heat sinks on both wires on capacitors that are on the pots when you are grounding new wires.
This was far simpler than I thought because the humbucker is not somehow in the middle of everything-- it goes to the on-off-on first, THEN it goes to the 5 way switch, so it's just a normal coil split before the 5 way, and it connects to the same 5 way lug that the old push-push did.
