Rich Kids "Put You In the Picture" riff tone, how to cop it?

How would you approximate the guitar sound on the opening riff that repeats throughout the song?
Delay? Hollowbody guitar? Weird amp settings? Obscure dirt box? Bridge or neck pickup?
It's kinda vaguely similar to Tom Petty's "Running Down a Dream" so there is that clue.

I had not heard this song since the 1980s and when I heard it yesterday that tone blew me away.

It was released in 1978. That is all I know. I watched some live clips and they didn't try hard to reproduce that sound live. The guitar players have a Les Paul and a Yamaha SG but there is one old clip where they both have hollowbodies but it's lip-synced so who knows what they really played on the recording.

I don't think I'd heard this song before, so I can't be much help as far as background. To my ear it sounds like a Super Distortion or similar into a cranked JMP, probably with a boost out front.

LPB-1? Had not thought of that - cuts highs and gives that round, bloated tone. You may be right?
I now know the track was produced by Mick Ronson. But still no clues on equipment.

Well, early Rich Kid's is Les Paul from Mick Jones but this is after.

But I mostly hear Gibson 335 Bridge Humbucker with a Marshall 50/100W with darker speakers -probably 65W Celestions and some vibey chorus effect pedal.
