Seriously...AWESOME FRIGGIN PEDAL...

I still have to play some more with it...but this thing is def a Plexi Stack at low volumes...

I a/b ;ed it against the drive channel on my Rivera...and it's not quite as warm as tubes, but it's pretty close...and at low volumes it's def crunchier cos of the power tube emulation. Very dynamic and responsive. Cleans up pretty well.


I'm starting to think that maybe it's the amp w/ regards to how twangy my 59s sound.....the "cardboard highs" Rid spoke of in the other thread. I'm gonna bring the PlexiTone and my Hamer with me to the local shop and put it through some other tube amps and see this weekend.

If you've been jonesing for a good classic Marshall tone for your Fender or other awesome clean amp...BUY THIS FREAKING THING NOW....:laugh2:

Heh..don't get me wrong...it's not gonna match up to a real plexi cranked to 10 through 2 4x12 w/ greenbacks...

But for $200..it's a no brainer if you don't wanna/cannot buy a boutique amp or the real thing.

Very fun pedal....

I agree. I have never heard a pedal get closer to a Marshall than the Plexitone. It's also versatile and very practical for live playing, with the 3 buttons for crunch, high gain and boost.

MMMMM GAS......I'm going to all of the music stores in Portland this weekend after Thanksgiving while the ladies go to the mall. This pedal sounds like its just what I'm looking for.

Does it have the right character to put right in front of a Plexi halfstack? It sounds to me like it would, but I'm curious about if it would have an overload of mids being mated with a Marshall. Yes, no?

I like it more with my home brew amp which has massive headroom, though I have not spent a lot of time tweaking it with my Marshall yet.

Glad you are digging it Jeff:)
It shines the most on big amps on clean, with a 2x12 or a 4x12 with celestions or something close in voicing.
What it really provides is the bite and thumping lowend of that dreaded stack;)
The mids are quite high and follows the amp in many respects.
It will not add much, it really just needs a good amp, I made it because I was using either a Hiwatt or a Park set on clean club levels, and I wanted something that would sound more or less like the amps at 10.
So I went for that feel.
It sounds even better at loud volumes;)
That is where the real test sets in...hehe

I wonder how the Plexitone would work with one of my setups? I've got a Fender DRRI and I'm using a G12H30 that's housed in a seperate closed back cabinet that's used as the main. Right now I'm using a Barber Direct Drive SS and it actually sounds pretty good. Any thoughts on how Rids magic pedal would sound thru my setup?

I ran it two ways through my Rivera...

1st was on the Clean Channel. The "tweed" (i.e. Bassman) setting. All knobs neutral (5) except for presence which was on 3. Bright switch was not engaged. It's a very dark tone set that way...old school Jazzy (without the pedal on, I mean). I also tried by pulling the notch switch (which puts it into "blackface" mode). Obviously it was brighter and thinner there, but with some tweaks still sounded nice.

I also ran it into the Marshall channel. with the MV high and the volume (gain) backed off to 1. Again it sounded very good.

I have not run it through a "real" Marshall,, however the Rivera should be close enough? Steve's clip through the 1987X (the first one he posted) was pretty damn good, if ya ask me. I didn't feel it was overly middy when I tweaked it. When I a/b'ed it on the gain channel set for "clean" (as above, MV10, Gain 1) against the Rivera at full gain (MV1, Gain 8-ish), the Plexi-tone actually had a bit less mids. I would be hesitant to say yes or no...I think you'd hafta try with your own amps Joe.

Rid is right too..HUGE bottom end. The Chubster already thumps as it is due to the cab design and with the pedal on and the volume where I could talk over it, I was still getting some rattles from change on the windowsill and things like that. The "Bite" is there too. Set for a low crunch, I got some really cool "heavy blues" (think Blackmore, or Allman brothers) tones.

Also as Steve said the versatility is way cool with the 2 "channels" and the boost. I think my neighbor crapped his pants when I hit the boost by accident and didn't realize it was turned all the way up! :laugh2:

It won't do 800/JMP crunch, it's not designed for that. But if ya want Cream through VH1, this ped will do it. I'm a metalface/800-type guy for the most part, so I still don't know if this is something that will suit my needs, but there's no doubt this is one incredible pedal if you want the sound of 1968-70ish Plexi. Especially for the home. Far better than any Plexi model I've heard from Line 6, Boss, or Vox...not even in the same galaxy.

Very, very cool and authentic sounding pedal Rid..you should be really proud! :)

Awesome that you designed it around a HiWatt... because I think I'm going to pick one up after christmas for my Sound City, which have similar voicings.

OK, question of the day... My DSL50 is TOO loud so I have been looking for alternatives; found a Pro Junior at a local store with a Celestion speaker for a good price - would that amp and Rid's masterpiece work well together?

I love blues (Buddy Guy, Freddie King), classic rock (Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, early Beck, ZZ Top), and early 80s metal (VH1/2, Y&T, Judas) - can this all be done by one amp and a pedal? I love the idea of pedal off = "clean" then have crunch, lead, and boost on the pedal - mainly will be using a JB strat (Hot Noiseless) and a Yamaha AES620HB (JB/APS clone). How does the Plexi work with running a wah thru it?

If it works, the idea of a "4 channel" set-up for around $500 is pretty hard to resist...

I don't really know to tell ya the truth. The fender pro's voicing is somewhat similar to the Riveras Fender channel, but it has virtually nothing to tweak with. Perhaps an EQ ped would be in order as well? Also the juniors break up right quick...I think as Rid stated you'd want more headroom since that was the way it was designed...even for home playing.


I'm gonna try and run it through something like the Crate V30 12" combo and see how it sounds compared to the Rivera, as I think Rid is onto something regarding the "cardboard" highs.

I LOVE the pedal...in no way am I saying it's not great..but as I said before I'm more of a metalface/JMP/800 series guy for my main tones...more Iron Maiden/Schenker/Scorpions/Sykes than Clapton/Allman Bros/VH..so it may not work out for me as my main marshall type sound. But I'm gonna give it a good workout and see what I can pull out of it before I decide one way or another.

If you are looking for cranked *PLEXI* tone at any volume...it's named quite appropriately :D

Trust me it can be very mean if you set it to it, it is all in the amp.
We scooped the mids on the Hiwatt and gave it more bite and bottom, the sound became very modern and tight.
Then we tried alot of other variations, even stuck a compressor in front of it, for very smooth fusion like tones:)

I'm gonna play around with it Rid to see if I can get close to a mid 70s metalface/JMP type tone (similar to the clips I posted)....Not givin up yet! I wasn't able to dial in that sound last night...I'll give it a thorough workout! :)

If I was a strictly PLEXI guy though..pffft...I'd be done....I obtained that within about 3 seconds of pluggin it in!
