PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

(It's a little different this time around.)

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 2 of the February 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other seven riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

Contrary to previous Riff-Off tournaments, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the four contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 3.

I encourage you to score each of the eight riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

The tone is as nasty as I've ever heard, and it fits this riff perfectly.

The riff itself lays down a recognizable groove that's easy for non-musicians to get.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

this is probably my favorite this time around.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

youch!!

That's cool. There's just no denying this one.

Those harmonic overtones are just jumping out there.

Loving the Jimmy Pageness of this.

A+

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

Wow that tone is nasty~! Very tight execution with the perfect amount of delay to bind everything together. Great job, Slip!

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

Skanky tone! Neat lil funky rhythm too... I can see this working really well as an intro or a break in between a bigger guitar sound.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

Nice! I'm curious to see who's hiding behind this battle name, because I like your style.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

Not diggin' the tone personally but I try to look beyond that to the riff lying underneath. The riff is good. A perfect example of the definition of a riff. Interesting? Hard to tell.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

wow not a tone i wouldve expected after the first round entry ... nice diversity ... the riff definitely grooves though ... nice execution of the single note bits and leaving space for the delay tails ... hope to hear more

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

Nice, very Page-esque. I like the tone alot, definately stands out.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

Reminds me of Pat Travers' "Gettin' Betta". Not a fan of that tone but the riff is cool.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Slip-Sliding

cocked wah

correct !

line 6 modeled cocked wha to be specific ...
:D

mr slip indicated to me that he just got tired of looking for a happenin' tone for this riff ... he cmae up with the riff while playing unplugged then went to the computer to record it ... nothing he conjured up had the right blend of clarity with drive without being fizzy or muddy or harsh or generic ... so he just clicked on the wah in gearbox (along with the rat and the tube echo) and tore off a first take and went with it .. he personally doesnt like the tone of this riff at all .. he can live with it as having an attitude consonant with the feel of the riff .. but he cringes when he hears it ... he thinks it sounds even worse as an mp3 than it does as a full bandwidth wave on his setup

he is eternally grateful to all who said nice things about his riffs this tournament and who voted them even higher then he voted himself
