PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of two riffs in the Championship Round of the February 2010 Riff-Off. Each riff can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

Contrary to previous Riff-Off tournaments, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the contestant with the highest average scores will take the title of Riffologist Extraordinaire, battling in the title bout for the title of SDUGF Riffologist Supremö.

I encourage you to score both of the riffs in this round. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Have fun!

I like the riff and I like the tone. I would have liked to hear a nice ending to this one instead of it cutting off abruptly.

Actually, I think a bigger sound may have fit this riff better. All I can say is that this submission is just OK - it doesn't quite do it for me.

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

This sounds a bit "clunky" for me. the tone does not fit the idea, and the idea is a bit uncontrolled. I like the playing skills and details, but all in all, not as good as the last entry!
Cheers!

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

The execution could have been a little title, and I think a more defined-sounding tone with less fuzz would have accentuated it as well. Nice entry, nonetheless. Good use of legato.

But dude... gotta learn to fade those riffs or at least edit them properly. That abrupt cut-off thing drives me batpoop crazy. If is is a result of some problem with your recording program that you can't get around, I understand, but man that drives me nuts. And for the record that didn't affect the score I gave.

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

Seems really 'wandery' to me - can't find a central theme or harmony to it. Part of it is kind of Tool-ish, part of it is kind of just toolish.

Cool enough noodling, but I'm not hearing much else.

my theory is all of his clips are edited from complete songs done some time earlier. That's why they cut off, because the rest of the band is about to come in.

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

I wanna jam with you Gerry.

All of the criticism regarding the cut off, execution, and tone are spot on IMO.

But I have to give this one high marks for creativity, which IMO is really the point. It has a really cool, almost baroque quality about it. Again, this is where the feedback gets subjective but I love the fact that this sounds like it doesn't need anything else. No drums, bass, or anything else is needed to carry this off. Maybe that's where it differs from what most people expect a riff to be which may partially explain why at this point muzzy seems to be running away with it.

If GoDrex is correct and this is an edited bit of an existing tune, please share it with us after the contest.

if you go back and listen, all of Gerry's clips cut off like this.

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

Yeah, it could just be his way of recording though too. Sometimes I find it easier to just hit record and start jamming away. When I do that sometimes I psych myself out and forget I'm recording, thus eliminating stage fright and over thinking things. When I go back and listen I can pick out little gems that I otherwise may have been too uptight and uncomfortable to play.

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

This is a good riff. It's missing that something, that spark to make it a great riff. It's a little too square, and a little too noodly, I really need something to grab on to though...

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

i like this alot
has a lot of melodic drama ... very thematic
deserve to be proud of all your entries ... i voted highly for all of them in each round as they were consistently in the top half of each rounds offerings

way to go

Re: Riff-Off 3.4: Gerry Troll

Fun riff for sure. It doesn't quite do it for me this time around, though. But once again you prove to be a highly proficient player - I am really curious to see who is hiding behind this Gerry-character!

Well done!

Excellent playing, technical performance is superb but I couldn't find the rythm too it... tone wasn't bad imo, not sure I see the need for a change it that...
