PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of eight riffs in Round 2 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other seven riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the four contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 3.

I encourage you to score each of the eight riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Have fun!

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

I really like this. I guess out of this round it is the most fun sounding. I think I am hearing very slight timing glitches when the riff exits the walk-ups. In any case, this one advances on my scorecard.

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

Great tone, and reminds me of an engine idling before it roars down the quarter mile --- it shows a song with a lot of potential, and I like that!

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

This is my favourite riff from this batch. Great rock vibe on this one . . . I'm hooked.

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

Great bluesy feel, good tone, good execution... seems like a little timing error, same one that Laz commented on, I noticed too... Generally this is all around a great riff...

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

Love it. Love the blues and totally appreciate a good blues lick now and then. It's catchy, memorable, and does everything a good riff should. I could totally see this building in a Cat Scratch Fever sort of way. And I love the slight tempo shift during the single note chord build up at the turnarounds.

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

I really like this one! As others have mentioned, it has a bluesy, "hot rodder" feel.....cool tone that's not over-cooked!....nice Job!:burnout:

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

Well, I know I'm going to be humming this one for a while. When I was listening to this riff, I immediately thought to myself, "How am I going to compete against this?" I should take this as encouragement, though, because I'll only have to record one riff.

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

gotta say off the bat I like any riff I think I can't play, and this is one of them. nice vibe. nice "what's he doing there?" quality to it. dig it. I think this is the first 6 I've put down yet.

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

$ Non Blondes did a cover of Van Halen's "I'm The One" with a tone and a groove very similar to this. It hints at Knopfler and Gibbons and rambles very comfortably on top of the beat. The ride's fast and bumpy, but it's a fun one!

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

Fantastic! I wish notes just rolled offa my fingers like that.

Couldn't say it better myself --- this one sounds kind of like Clapton --- well, not like Clapton, but with that same nonchalant / effortless feel.

I have listened to this one a lot!

Re: Riff-Off 4.2: Bifidus Riffularis

Dang! You sure bring the chops! Solid as heck! You kinda get me raise the eyebrows at a couple of the turnarounds, and I'm not sure if I get the rhythm of it, to be honest. However, I'll not subtract from the score because of that. On second thought, it kinda works as an eyebrow-raiser also for those who aren't really musically oriented. Cool!
