PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of four riffs in Round 3 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other three riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the two contestants with the highest average scores will advance to the Championship Round.

I encourage you to score each of the four riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 3 riff: Bifidus Riffularis

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

i want to like it more than i do
nice tone - nice playing - fun vibe
but the A-B-B-A format of the fragments take it away from solid riff territory and too close to progression ville
not voting yet - gotta let it simmer before i can decide

This is a song for driving in your convertible in.

1985, white Mercedes SL500 droptop, at the beach, wind in your hair, wild girl as your copilot.

Nyeah!

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Bifidus Riffularis

It took me a few listens, but I finally caught on! Very cool use of pick up notes to make each repeat start on the "up" (at least that's how it sounds to me). Glad I gave multiple listens, cuz that slick trick earns an extra point in my book.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Bifidus Riffularis

i really like the throaty twang of the tone

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Bifidus Riffularis

Now THAT is a riff. I love the little subtle variations that were done on each pass. Great tone to boot. Killer stuff.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Bifidus Riffularis

The tone is really, really good. I get it and I like it, and you definitely deserve to be here. I wish it evoked more feeling and response from me, but based on the execution and the tone and everything else, I'll mark it well. I guess the difference really is that this sounds like it should be a verse, and it allows room for vocals to some extent. That's really what a riff is supposed to do, but stepping back from center stage just takes away a bit of what I heard in the past two submissions.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Bifidus Riffularis

Great riff, great tone, great playing.

+1

... and I agree with Blue, the pick up note fills add a lot. Without them the submission would still be bouncy and cheeful ...... but a bit too dry.

I really like that the descending dyads are not produced by adding a second track/guitarist.

This may be my favorite this round.

nice toe tapper. dig the tone a lot. I'd like to watch this one being played. maybe you could do a video of it when the tourney is all said and done?

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Bifidus Riffularis

What the hell is this one doing that I like? I don't know crap for crap about what does what, so is it a slightly out of phase/tune chord or what?

Simple. but I like it. Good job bro. :friday:
