PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of two riffs in the Championship Round of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each riff can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month's Riff-Off tournament, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the contestant with the highest average scores will take the title of Riffologist Extraordinaire, battling in the title bout for the title of SDUGF Riffologist Supremö.

I encourage you to score both of the riffs in this round. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Have fun!

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

i really like the weightiness of the tone on this. the chugs and the "E"s sound just crushing.

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

It lacks groove an power, but it opens up well and the time signature makes it original. Not as good as the last riff you sent, but it is hard to top!

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

what time signature is it in? ... is it one time signature or mixed meter with different measures in different time signatures? .. i can count it as 3 measures of 7/4 time, but the accented notes really dont fit .. i can count it as 5 measures of 4/4 with an extra beat, but that too gives me trouble with the accented notes .. anyone have a clue?

also, how many repeats of the riff is this? i think i count 3 but am not sure

it is creative but hard to grasp hold of conceptually .. to me, a good riff grabs you somewhere and instantly hooks you along for the ride .. it is very well performed and the tone suits the vibe well

nice job

Try counting it with one measure of 11/4, and the next one as 10/4. It locks tight then. there are three repeats of the pattern.

Here's Mr. Rodeo's response:

"The riff was made up without a time signature in mind, but is played to a constant BPM of 135. I'm not good with time signatures but the riff has 2 halves - each with different signatures. Don't know why, it just felt right.

"The riff repeats 3 times. Since the 2nd time ended slightly differently I chose to play it a 3rd time (the same as the 1st) to make the riff 'officially repeat.'"

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

I just imported it into sonar, and banged out a drum part to it. I wasn't counting ... just feeling it.

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

I wish I could vote on playing alone, because as a riff, I feel like there's a problem with this one. I can't see it fitting in as the main lick of a song really at all. As a breakdown, perfect. As an intro, perfect. As a riff? Hard to say it works correctly.

HOWEVER, I can't mark it badly, because the tone works, the feel works, the speed works. The ONLY complaint I've got is that it's real hard to say it's a better riff than Uncle Paul's. Maybe it's the length of each repetition that's giving me fits.

Anyways, I'm giving you the same rating. I can't pick a winner.

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

Sounds like the Beat It riff in reverse. Beefy sounding, good job.

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

I'm glad I listened again before voting. I don't think I gave this riff the attention it deserved. I really dig the strange pattern / timing. Great job man, really.

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

odd, but interesting riff. dig the complexity, but any riff that requires that much explainin' misses its mark a bit I'd say. dug your last riff a bit more, but points granted for tightness, tone, and orginality.

Re: Riff-Off 4.4: Lipstick Rodeo

really interesting time signature, threw me off the first 2 times I listened too it but I get the feel of it now... really dig it, great playing and tone too...
