Rio Grande Tallboy/Halfbreed/Muy Grande? opinions/suggestions?

i've been gas'ing for a strat for a while now. but can't really justify a new guitar. nor do i really want a new guitar (i know... wtf :eyecrazy:)

currently i've wired my 2 HBs (s.demon/f.shred) to split, but it just doesn't have a convincing single-coil/strat sound

does anybody here have experience with one of the above (TB, HB, MG) in the neck position?

Actually ive had all 3 of those pickups in the neck slot of various guitars at various times. What guitar are you looking to put this in? I'm a big fan of the muy grande in both humbucking and split. But its not a 50's vintage strat sound. Its a darker dirtier sound. The tallboy is great and very chimey but its easy for it to get over the top and sound thin. The half breed splits the difference between them and to my ears sounds the most even.

But just how close of a strat single coil sound you get will depend on the guitar.

Nice guitar. Though sadly being 24 frets it will be harder for any pickup to produce great strat tones in the neck position. In that guitar being it has a floyd i would shy away from the vintage tall boys and lean towards the muy grande. I have a Robin Medley VI that is similar configuration yours and the muy grande sounds excellent in the neck of it. But that being said while I do really dig the sounds I get out of the guitar they arent the most authentic single coil strat tones ive ever heard. But its not fault of the pickups but rather the configuration of the guitar.

Try a Stag mag too. A friend of mine didnt use his neck pickup of his LP in years. I swapped in a Stag Mag and hardwired it in parallel. He has now a pretty convincing strat in-between setting (2 or 4 on the5 way switch).

Better get a fuzz face pedal then,, Jimmy used one ALOT.

I have the Tallboy in a MIM 50's style strat. I think it does a good job of doing vintage tones. I have it paired up with two QBs and like it. They balance well in the low output setting and single coils and also well with both coils on in high power mode.

wouldn't the muy grande be too hot for the neck position?
i don't need exact strat tones, just looking for that sharper attack of the singles

is it possible to build my own single coil humbucker? which single coils? and how would this be done?

wouldn't a stag mag be too hot for the neck position? especially paired with a 13k bridge pickup?
