Rivera Knucklehead tubes

I don't know if you guys remember but awhile back I was talking about whether to get a Mesa Triple Rectifier or a Rivera Knucklehead as my next amp. I was leaning toward SOAD but now I'm leaning toward Slipknot  . So I learned that Jim Root and Mick Thomson play Knuckleheads and I also learned I love their tone. I've got the guitar for the job, and the pickups. I just need the amp. Anyway can you guys give me pros/cons of 6L6 vs EL34, or just predominating qualities, major minor differences etc if at all possible? This will decide my next major purchase... thanks guys

Re: Rivera Knucklehead tubes

I had a knucklehead with el34's in it. Generally, EL34's are more associated with the Marshall end of the spectrum, while 6L6 are more Fendery if that's a word.

In the KH55, the EL34's on the Fender channel sounded just like a Fender with 6L6's. on the Marshall channel, it sounded like a big=ass plexi.

Nuff said. Get the El34's. And if you play out and need a lot of clean headroom, go with the 100 watt version.

Re: Rivera Knucklehead tubes

Jim Root uses a 6L6 model slaving an EL34 model, so he's basically running one of each. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe Mick only uses the 6L6 model.

For their older stuff, Jim used a Mesa DC10, and Mick used a Marshall JMP-1 (later replaced with a Line6 POD Pro) into a Mesa 2:95 power amp.

Re: Rivera Knucklehead tubes

Just go try it out, there tones will always be different than on the records, and tone is in the fingers.

Re: Rivera Knucklehead tubes

I can testify yet again, the EL34 model just smokes. When I had mine, Rivera was still shipping Siemans power tubes. Awesome tubes. I had a set of JJ EL34L's waiting as back up as I was using this amp during my short country gig phase. Incredible country tones if you can believe that!

Slipknot know uses krank amps as far as I know. Check out the first soundclip on the clips page by Danny Jones. www.krankamps.com I really like that tone.

Some Krank employee was on GG posting about how great Krank was, and said that Slipknot was now using them. He pointed out that you could see one in the new Slipknot video. A couple of board members checked it out, but they said it was a Rivera.

Krank's know for using shady selling tactics. That's why they were banned over at HC. Just try to find them in the user review section....

.....they were removed for posting false reviews.....

(I'll try and find a link to the GG thread)

EDIT: I tried to find it, it seems the admins deleted it....

Correction....

Jim Root uses a KT88 Knucklehead slaving one with 6L6s.

And, as already corrected above, Mick uses EL34's.
