Re: Robert Johnson's guitar for sale: $6,000,000

I remember an auction site that had a guitar on there that 'must've been' Robert Johnson's. The "provenance" link was useless. There is absolutely NO PROOF whatsoever that the guitar is or was or even ever in the vicinity of Robert Johnson the famous bluesman.

Not surprising...not surprising at all.

Every beat up axe that looks like that from that era is going to be sold as such.

*shrugs*

And hey....six million is alot....but even if they unload it at a million it's still a serious amount of cake for it.

Re: Robert Johnson's guitar for sale: $6,000,000

You know, if I had the change to buy it, I would take it to Mike Einziger (the guitar tech for Incubus) and have him route it for a Floyd Rose and a Humbucker.

Just cant beat a vintage collectors item for tone and playability. They just dont make em the same way anymore and for some reason you cant get a dead on copy made???? Might as well shell out the big bucks and buy the real thing and mod it to what you want.

Re: Robert Johnson's guitar for sale: $6,000,000

I'm thinking maybe add a second neck, and do a Jimmy Page Stairway extra 12 string deal on it, but that could just be me.

Assuming it was his, the guy played some killer guitar, but that doesn't translate into a 6M axe.

Consider that Stradivarius violins - probably similar money - are sought after for their tone, not just that they are rare as ####, and come from the late 1600s. I can't even play violin, and I'll drop my change on an S first.

Re: Robert Johnson's guitar for sale: $6,000,000

I would believe that if anyone ever proved they had had possession of the real thing that it could fetch more than $6 million. Never has a guitar with more historic value ever existed.

I like to think that the guitar exists, and someone can prove its authenticity... they just choose to keep it a secret because of the media storm unveiling it would cause, not to mention the attention it would gain from unwanted people, such as offers to buy it and would be thieves.

As for the link within the Rolling Stone article, I see no mention of the guitar.

I don't get it. Went to the sellers website, there is no mention anywhere of Robert Johnsons Guitar??

Have you seen that site?

It WAS at: http://www.rjguitar.com/

They don't even pretend to have any proof that it was Johnson's. "Look at this grainy 80 year old photograph- that guitar in the picture looks just like this one, so therefore this MUST be that guitar."

Yeah.

However, the company's curator, Gary Zimet, said he was not permitted to provide any additional information about the provenance of the instrument or the person who is selling it. "All I am authorised to tell you is that it was purchased in America, in the south, and that it is currently owned by a fellow living abroad," he said. "The owner is playing his cards very close to his vest." Asked as to how someone could be sure the guitar was genuine, he added: "Anyone potential purchaser is welcome to examine it in person and have his or her own expert go over it with a toothcomb."

BTW- this was going around Last Year about this time.

Ain't picking on you, but Mike Einziger is the actual guitarist in Incubus... his tech is that Larrytech guy on here recently.

Seems like a cool guy, but I can never forgive him for taking the router to my favorite vintage Gibsons!

But.... yeah, I'd put a Kahler on Robert Johnson's old guitar. Might have the fretboard scalloped too.

Re: Robert Johnson's guitar for sale: $6,000,000

Can sell that guitar and start your own guitar company.. not too shabby.

I wonder how it would sound. Maybe you immediately become sold to the devil, and start singing the blues.
