Any1 had one of these? I heard Steve Vai and Satch use'em! Its on Aus ebay starting at $150.

I got one.

I just use the Seeing Eye Mod - not the ultra mod. Ultra mod sounds more mid-heavy, sharper and louder to me.

The SEM I use with the tone below 9 oclock and drive ranging from 12 oclock (for warm crunch) to 5 oclock (maxed out - for mega distortion) . If you bring the tone anywhere above 9 oclock it starts sounding tinny and sharp through my fender blues junior. It looses bottom end and sounds very very sharp - unuseable.

This is a very good pedal to my ears (with the tone rolled way down). I'm yet to try my new Heritage Les Paul through it. I'll record many clips with all 3 of my guitars - Strat, Tele, and Les Paul when I have the time.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

It's a great mod, but I like John Spina's much better.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

Would it be worth sending over my Metal Zone? Can you make out the notes better?

Yep, the clarity is improved. I agree with RK's statement that it is basically a Soldano in a box.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

Uh wats soldano? I might consider sending my MT-2 over to get done!

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

Oh and on the site the 3 modes sound all the same! Is there a decent amount of versatility between the modes?

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

I have a Ultra DS1 that i bought 2nd hand from mrid himself! ;) i have to say that it's a HUGE improvement over the stock ds1. more gain, more crunch, more depth and clarity and range of tone, better dynamics, more low end (specially with the fat switch on). It's like a little Marshall in a box and sounds wonderful with a tube amp. I would never go back to stock at this point.

So the Keeley mod's are really that effective? I took a chance and bought a new DS-1 pedal this weekend. The one thing that was a pleasant surprise was that there was no lack of bass when using the pedal. Thru my amp I get a pretty good sound with the DS-1's dials all on about a 10:00 position. I'm not doubting your finding's but I am a tad leary when I hear of a pedal that sound's like a "Marshall in a box". The closest I've come is with my Tonebone Classic pedal, but I do need to EQ it to some degree. It seems that most pedal's with that claim to sound Marshall-like have that fuzzy high end to them and to me that's not how a Marshall sound's. Again, I'm not doubting you but does the modded DS-1 REALLY sound more Marshall like? Thanks.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

It may not sound TOTALLY like a Marshall on its own but it will help any amp get into that territory. The Hot British nails it (i used to have one) its like an 800 w/ gain mods.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

BD2, I meant to ask one more thing about the modded DS-1. In it's stock form I noticed that the distortion can be a bit fuzzy if it's to high. After the mod's is that fuzziness gone? Is it more like an overdrive vs. a distortion?

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

The fuzzy, fizzy properties disappear, yes. What you get instead is pure driven distortion with teeth on top. This is especially noticable with a loud tube amp and the fat switch on.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

I recomend all Keeley mods. Get the SEM DS-1 mod and TS-9 Plus mod. You will not be sorry. Using the TS-9 to boost the DS-1 just sounds brutal.

Re: Robert Keeley modded BOSS ULTRA DS1

I realy am considering buying this but I've taken advice on so many things before and been disapointed. This is something I can't test or try out! I'd like to hear what other people have heard about it as well!
THANX HEAPS!

I believe there are sound clips of the pedal on www.robertkeeley.com

There are also user reviews of products on Keeley stuff here http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/Keeley/
