Someone once told me this pedal is the best Hi-gain distortion poedal going. Any opinions? Any others that are the best of the extreme distortion/OD's?

Re: Rocktron Silver Dragon?

The competition is quite strong. I would consider the following pedals over the Silver Dragon :

Damage Control Womanizer/Demonizer
Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic/Metal Mayhem
Maxon ROD 881 Real Overdrive/Distortion
Radial Tonebone Trimode/Plexitube
Electro Harmonix English Muff'n

In that order.

Re: Rocktron Silver Dragon?

I don't have the Silver Dragon, but I have 25 distortion pedals. I don't claim that having a lot of fuzzers makes me an expert, but it gives me the oportunity to compare side-by-side. Overall, my 2 favorites are the Boss Mega Distortion and the Keeley-modified RAT. Both do heavy distortion really well, and both of them clean up nicely. The MD-2 gets heavier, but I keep it in "rock-distortion" terretory with customizable bass response. It effectively covers everything from dirty boost to crushing metal distortion, and it sounds awesome with both solid state amps and tube amps. It just doesn't do a fuzz tone convincingly. The RAT doesn't get as heavy, but it gives those fuzz-like overtones, and it articulates better than a Muff, even at heavy distortion settings.

In the Rocktron group, I have tried the Metal Planet, and I own the Zombie. The Zombie sounds great, and I like having control over the symmetry of the distortion wave shape, but I wish I could turn the fuzziness down on it. I usually don't play with that much distortion. The cool thing about the Zombie is that they describe this gimmicky "psychoacoustic 3-D" sound with variation of the "Stare" knob, but it actually works.

Re: Rocktron Silver Dragon?

I own one and to my ears it is somewhat Mesa voiced. The bass is pretty huge without being flabby and the highs can get shrill if treble is set too high.Definitely a good aggressive high gainer overall. The cons are that it is pretty big ,a bit noisy and doesn't have a mid control. I haven't tried the other pedals mentioned here so I can't tell how the SD stacks up.

Re: Rocktron Silver Dragon?

I have one. I agree the bass is huge, and it has a Mesa styled voice to me as well. I have the twin tube as well. They are very differently voiced and styled pedals to me. The Muff's would be closer to the Silver Dragon to me than the Twin Tube. The English Muff'n is more like the Twin Tube for voice but a bit grainer to me.

Re: Rocktron Silver Dragon?

Great pedals when you put a hi-grade 12ax7 in it...Not as thick and tight as i like ,but a huge bottom end and a full midrange..
