Roland Jc amps w/ tube ods

Hey all...

...I currently don't have a main amp. One thing I'm after is a great clean sound. I've played a few JC amps and dug them...plus they are CHEAP, which is a good thing. However, they are still SS...

What kinda difference does putting a tube overdrive (Twin Tube Classic for example) in front of one of these make? Does it really "tube" up the sound noticably, or will it not make much of a difference? Anyone have experience?

Thanks!

I don't know about tube pedals, but a Rat through a JC is one of the great all time guitar sounds. I always liked the JC77, it's a lot lighter than the 120.

I used to use a JC-120 with a Peavey Rockmaster tube preamp. My experience with the JC-120 is that it'll simply make whatever you put in front of it REALLY LOUD :D

i love chorus amps!!!! the rolands are nice! I bought a mid 90's Fender Ultimate Chorus amp as the cleans are wonderful yet the OD channel is a SS Beast that is fun to play with!!!!!

Re: Roland Jc amps w/ tube ods

You will be able to shape the sound before the front end, and then make it REALLY LOUD. As for the tube thing, well it's also about the response, dynamics and feel. Which playing a great-sounding PA wont give you. But having said that, i played a JC, and it was great. Especially if you like effects. Nothing wrong.

But i wouln't go too out of my way to insist on tube something in front. Unless it sounds good to you. Tube amps, as i say, are more than a pre-amp thing.

I agree. Real power tube overdrive is something you won't be able to get...

Spacecaptain, I was thinking about this setup myself some months ago, the same one that you are suggesting.

While most people (even guitar players) cannot really hear a big difference between power tube overdrive and a nice pedal through a clean amp, I decided to go for a tube amp.

The main reason was that I wanted to remain pure and get the real source of overdrive rather than get a pedal which afterall simulates what a tube amp does. (don't get me wrong, some pedals reproduce that pretty good). Other reasons were the fun of overdriving a non master volume amp, changing tubes, changing rectifiers, modifying etc...

Re: Roland Jc amps w/ tube ods

Thanks so much for all the advice guys!

Basically...the deal is I have about $500 or so to throw around. A little bit more if it's an incredible deal, but not much.

There is a JC-55 on eBay now for $335...the price is well under my range, and it's LIGHT (31 lbs.), but I'd imagine the 8" speakers would not be so good?

I know that a tube OD doesn't give you the power tube OD that is real what having a tube amp is all about, and in no way am I closing the doors to none tube-ODs...the idea sounds interesting in theory I guess. I'll definitely check out a RAT!

Not really sure what to do...just throwing ideas out there!
