It isn't my monitoring. I also get my ears used to the sound by listening to plenty of commercial mixed through them. It's weird though because I didn't ask for a critique of the sound and it isn't unlistenable so why is everyone making such a big deal?

How is no-one even considering that half of the sound wasn't my decision and more imporantly, who cares? Youngthrasher9 and DankStar are the people I had in mind to have a listen.

Not people that use stupid trash-talk like "lifeless" "plastic" "no mids". The guy who wanted it for his project did the final EQ in pre-master. I thought it sounded cool and kinda bad-ass and I used his mix. It didn't strike me as odd, plus I'm not going to change my opinion to conform to your standards. That is for flakey yes-men.

The first mixdown has no compression, limiting or any of that hi-fi mid processing but you guys hardly seem worth the effort! I've been in the industry long enough to know how to take and use constructive criticism, this isn't it. It's complaining. Saying my monitor setup must be wrong seriously made me lol.

I won't deny that I'm defensive and high strung. I've been trying all I can to be less so and my life is extremely difficult and quite frankly horrible. Music is the only thing I care to live for.

But if you think for a second that what a handful of people on the SDUGF take a way from my personality on only a textual level with absolutely no real source of perspective, I'll at least credit you for a humourous little gag.

Oh no, am I banned from buying the Bro-buckers unil I get a lobotomy?

It has nothing to do with the musical style or one upmanship, let alone " do it all again to my standard " .

I like the music itself, but I do have to agree with the mix sounding a little hollow. I just threw it in my playlist and you'll see what I was listening to and how I compared it. (Yes, one of the earlier comments made me download the song in the first place. :D )

I'm not on studio monitors in my office, but if I took it upstairs to the studio and played it on them, I'm sure it'd sound about the same.

*Maybe* vocals would fill in the midrange some. I know when I'm looking for tone I pull all the mids out of the guitars, but I end up putting more in when I record, and then EQ it out later if necessary.

Right off the bat, not enough mids and the guitars are WAY too loud.

I will admit I dig the guitar tone, however.

Yes the guitars are definitely the loudest, mostly because I liked that tone so much that I wanted it to be the star of the show! So the drums are little more than a background beat. For a real metal song on a record, the drums are always driving with plenty of huge kick transients in my taste. As a matter of fact I just sourced my favorite room for tracking drums with a huge sound for the overheads :)

As for someone comparing this to a hot or not, I don't mean to be rude but I've heard people compliment and lick the boots of much much MUCH worse clips in production AND performance.

As for the mids thing... I've worked out what's happened. The guy who made the final "mix" for his project obviously isn't much of an engineer and comparing it to the mixdowns, he's way scooped the low mids. Must have been attracted to that pseudo hi-fi sound.

All in all though, there's no use arguing because I'm always going to sick my guns, not immediately retract and change my opinion because of other people. No good could come out of that.

That's the deal. You can tell the guitarist mixed it because of the focus on the guitar tone and levels over everything else.

OKAY :) So I thought I'd see what all the fuss is about and now everything makes sense.... Younger guy, impressionable, wouldn't quite have learned the less is more restraint yet and I can't imagine subtlety would be too high on his list when it comes to fancy plugins with shiny GUIs.

Listened to the mixdown which really does sound as dandy as we felt it did when we tracked it and his final product side by side, volume matched and here is what my ears are telling me so far.

In comparison on his version it seems that he's given it a fair dose of compression/limiting or perhaps both which is what would have smeared the transients of the drums, which now I see what Golden is talking about.

The hollowness (which I'm not even sure exactly what means but I'm going to guess it's like a scooped mid sound?) is most definitely due to the massive scoop in the low mids and a gargantuan spike in the sub-bass.

I can imagine a Padawan of engineering liking the exaggerated low hump and highs from after the first time someone would have said "lower the eq's instead of raising them" but that is what would have taken away the body of the snare drum and changed the way the low ends of the instruments sit. I'd only ever listen to the final version on my headphones and as we all know, only the studio tells no lies.

Here's a present to make up for it!

For our next record, we were looking for that awesome live sound for the drums without having to resort to reverbs and I do believe we've found it! I did a quick test of the kit in it's new home in our live room. It's a mixture of the close mics and the overheads/room mics. There is absolutely no eq adjustment, no compression, no processing of any kind. That room sound? Pure room baby!

I apologize for being nowhere as good as Damien. He is an absolute machine and I absolutely must do one again and get him in to play!

The way that kick drum punches already without having been EQ'd is making me really look forward to how the drums are going to turn out... gaaah I want to start recording the next album already!

Thought that it was a brootal sonic assault. I can't stand the style of music and generally abhor most metal made in the past 15 years, but I liked it anyways.

The drums were analog? They certainly didn't sound analog.

Great job on the whole thing, I enjoyed it.
