Routing Tool

I'm not sure which forum this should be going in, but I figured this seemed as good a choice as any. I'm looking for a good hand held routing tool. I'm getting into a little project where I'll be adding a pickup spot, as well as adding an extra cavity in the back for the extra knobs to come out the front. As I don't have any table equipment (and don't plan to own any while living in an apartment) what is a good hand-held option here? I need something that's going to be able to let me set depth so that I don't come right through the front of the guitar when I'm routing out the back control cavity.

Re: Routing Tool

Ryobi makes what they call a 'spiral saw' that you can pick up at Home Depot for about 40 bucks, ti give you a liitle over an inch of cuting depth but you have to take small bites but you can hold it with one hand. You can also pick up a basic hand held router for anywhere from $40.00 to over $300.00 depending on what you are looking for.

Re: Routing Tool

used a spiral saw and wood chisel for mine

single cut down one side to define the shape
single blow with chisel uprooted the block of wood

the blocks are in the left of pic

Re: Routing Tool

Do not buy Ryobi anything. It is sh!t.

Buy either a Porter Cable or Millwaukee trim router.

Re: Routing Tool

Another vote for a Dremel with the Router base add-on. Drill a starting hole for the router bit to fit in and then take her to town.
