I've been looking for a Tele like my old '51 and found this webiste. I'll bet some of you are already familiar with it but it's new to me. He makes exact copies of Roy Buchanan's old '53 Tele "Nancy" and SRV's '63 Strat and also new but reliced version of old tweed Fender amps.

Check it out...makes for interesting reading I think. And it's a nice website.

That's a great website, Lew-I've run across that before. I happen to agree [with the website] that it'll be unlikely that anyone will ever play a Tele like Roy. Truly one of the best.

That is a very cool site - he did an excellent job of recreating that guitar. I think that sound clip sounded very, very close to low-gain SRV tone.

It is too bad that Fender is charging $10,000+ for its hand-made creations. I would like to have and play one. Then again, with the right pups in a good sounding Strat, you can get very close, anyway. It is purely optical at that point.

I just think that #1 is such a neat looking guitar - so much history and tone.

Re: Roy's Tele, SRV's Strat...this guys makes relics!

BTW, did Guitar Player release the specs on #1's pickups?

Re: Roy's Tele, SRV's Strat...this guys makes relics!

What's up with the current infatuation with signature guitars? People used to cringe at the idea of playing someone's signature axe. Now, it's become commonplace.

I love the look of a good reliced or naturally reliced guitar. I do think that that trend is starting to wear off gradually. Fender took it too far. I think rare colors and upgraded features is where guitar fashion is headed nowadays.

does that guy SELL relic copies? i'd be interested in a 'nancy'

Great site. He originally did an early Tele which I used his ideas and pics when I did my Tele-Gib. A real detail fanatic. I don't think he sells his guitars, I heard a 'rumor' that someone tried to pass one of his Teles as a real original...or something like that.

Are you asking me? Or, just talking in general?

I've become a big fan of very carefully crafted and detailed guitar pieces. I think they are a work of art. I, personally, have never minded gigging with a signature guitar. I've been playing out with my Clapton Strat since '92. Overall, it is a great sounding guitar and people always give me compliments on its tone.

Now, would I go on stage at a Blues Bar with decked out SRV clone? I doubt it. But, I would sure enjoy recording with it and playing at home. The price tag makes this impossible, so it is really a moot point.

In the case of this thread, I started discussing the SRV guitar because it is one of the most famous guitars in modern history. Not only does it look cool and sound great, but it was played by a legend. Some may find this corny, but I think it is pretty cool.

Overall, I am more interested in the pickups than anything else. But, I wouldn't mind hosting one of the Fender Custom Shops for a week or two. :)

Why? Cuz it's fun! When I reliced my '54 I used pictures of Roy Buchanan's '53 as the model, BTW. I used the the belt buckle wear on the back of my '63 Strat as the model for the back of my '54 and pictures of Nancy for the front and edges. Now that I have my computor cleaned up and can post pics I'll take some pics and post them. Lew

Re: Roy's Tele, SRV's Strat...this guys makes relics!

I'm not knocking any of them, really. One of my strats is a beater that's been helped along by me in a relicing type of way, and it is fun to see how you can naturally age
instruments. My point is that companies have idolized "the real guitar generation"
so much that it's becoming comical. I like the idea of guys building VH, SRV, Hendrix
replicas, but am surprised by their growing popularity. It's almost as if new players just want to borrow another player's identity, not be as unique as their hero's actually were! Can you imagine SRV with a Jimmy Vaughan strat? Just a thought. LOL

Re: Roy's Tele, SRV's Strat...this guys makes relics!

I agree, It'd be nice just to have a few more variations on standard models, rather than having to be tied to a name on the headstock. Would it hurt Fender to implement the mid-boost feature on a few more of their strats, for example? Or have a more accessible version of the Pete Townsend SG (some can't pay £2,500+ for a single guitar), when there's no real "non-signiture" counterpart?

P.S. I could imagine Jimmy Vaughan with a SRV strat, though.

Very nice work! Thanks for the link. I can actually do real good relic work myself but I have trouble getting the finish to check properly and look authentic. I need to start doing my own finishing again and use shellac for the sealer coats an nitro for the finish coat, I guess. Then I can freeze them with freon and get it right. The problem I have is that my finishing shop is set up to spray water base and oil finishes only...no nitro. I design custom furniture for a living...guitars are my first love but people buy more furniture than guitars! Lew

I just sent the link to Donzo. He ought to get a kick out of it.

Re: Roy's Tele, SRV's Strat...this guys makes relics!

When Fender came out with the first "relic" strat, you could almost hear a gasp from the vintage guitar community. :D

Re: Roy's Tele, SRV's Strat...this guys makes relics!

i was given that link by randy here on the forum. I am not sure where he found it but that guy does some killer work on those teles. I want one but they are too much for me.

Hope you found lots of stuff you like butnut

I don't know Danny Gatton (spell check) played a mean tele too - but apples and oranges I guess.
By the way, Lew do you offer your services to others - I don't want a relic look but I do have a guitar I would like refinished??? :32:
