running POD through amp head direct

do any of ya'll know if it would work to just run a pod xt live through my epiphone valve jr. head into a sound board? i don't have the funds for a cab, i'd been running the valve jr. through my other amp that i sold. i'm not entirely clear on the whole impedance thing, i was thinking that, if it would work, it might add a little warmth to the signal. any suggestions?

Re: running POD through amp head direct

You could run the POD directly into the sound board. But if you want to warm up the sound with the Epiphone amp, you need to plug the POD into the Epi, the Epi into a cab (if it is the head version), mic the speaker cab, and plug the mic into the sound board. If you are talking about the Epiphone Valve Jr. Head, you can not plug the head's speaker out jack into the sound board; you need to plug that into a speaker cab and mic the cab. If you are talking about a combo amp, you still need to mic the speaker. But overall, I think that using a modeler with that Epiphone amp head is a coool idea.

Yeah, POD to soundboard - don't use a cab if going that route.

As far as I know, there's a big risk that the transformer will fry in your tube amp if you don't have it connected to a cabinet. Both my Marshall and Laney manuals say that the amp should not be turned on without being plugged into a cabinet, because it may damage the amp.

Yes, NEVER run a tube amp without a load- mass damage! Although the damage may not manifest itself immediatly, it may work for a few minutes before giving it up.
You can get away with it with most solid state amps.
Also, you cannot run the output of you EPi into the input of your other amp-if you do, you will blow up both amps.

Wow, who would even think of doing that? I've never even thought of doing that, not even when I knew NOTHING about amps.. :laugh2:

Thankfully my Laney has a "slave" option on the back.

Re: running POD through amp head direct

yeah, i figured.
as far as running the amp into other amp, i know better than that!
i just plugged the speaker from my other amp into the out from the epi.

Re: running POD through amp head direct

That works. Just make sure that when connecting amps to other amps, preamps go into power amps, and power amps go into cabs. Master/slave configurations give one preamp the ability to control 2 power amps. But you seem to know this stuff already.

I wouldn't run it to the sound board after the amp unless it says "LINE OUT". You want a line out signal.

Re: running POD through amp head direct

DO NOT RUN A HEAD WITHOUT A CAB CONNECTED...DOING SO WILL RESULT IN TEH DEATH OF SAID HEAD!

That said, just run the POD into the soundboard direct...

Re: running POD through amp head direct

You could run a head direct into a board with out micing it BUT you need some other gear. If you get a DI box with a speaker simulator like the Hughes and Kettner Redbox you can go Head Speaker out to Redbox. Then from the Redbox DI out to board. If you plug into the redbox you need to use speaker cable. Since you already have the pod I would just run the pod to board.

Re: running POD through amp head direct

POD direct to board.

But everyone else already said that.

I, OTOH, have done so for years. I used a small bass combo amp as a monitor.

POD-->DI box-->mixer
also, from the DI Hi-Z out--> combo amp.
