RWRP or not?

Guys. I have a strat with Hot Rails in neck and bridge. I’m upgrading the stock middle single coil to a Lundgren Blues. I understand that generally middle pickups in SSS guitars are RWRP so they are hum-cancelling when in positions 2 and 4. However given that I have humbuckers in neck and bridge, wouldn’t the middle pickup need to be wound normally, as the coil I’m pairing it with would already be RWRP?

Re: RWRP or not?

You can't hum cancel a single coil against a humbucker since the humbucker has no hum to combine with the single coil. So the polarity only matters in regards to being in phase with the humbucker.

Personally I'd use three humbuckers.

Re: RWRP or not?

I thought it would have to be wired so positions 2 and 4 would activate the middle single coil and one of the coils of the humbuckers.... would both coils plus the single be in operation?

Re: RWRP or not?

This would depend on which coil is being turned off, and the relationship with the middle single coil. Check out this diagram, where it auto-splits in position 2 & 4...there is no mention of the middle pickup that would need to be rw/rp. Things might be different if the pickups are from 2 different manufacturers.

Re: RWRP or not?

You can get a middle single coil to cancel hum in positions 2 and 4 by splitting the humbuckers, either automatically or with switching. Either a regular single or a rwrp will work, although I'd assume you'd choose a regular one since they're cheaper.
