Sailing By Moonlight -- live rig test/play through (video inside)

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
It took several rounds with amp and pedal combinations until I finally got something I was happy with, but here it is: the final setup for my live gigs.

Setup is pretty simple. It is:

Guitar: 1968 MIJ Fender Stratocaster reissue with DiMarzio HS-3 in the bridge
Effects chain: Thundertomate Fat Boost > Bogner Harlow > MXR Micro Flange > strymon DECO
Amp/speaker: Bumbox Cielo; amp reverb; Eminence Wizard

For the recording I used:
Sennheiser e609 > Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

Tonally I was going for a cross between Steve Howe (tape saturation, single repeat echo, edge of breakup clean) and Alex Lifeson (flange, big bottom Marshall tone on the heavy parts).

How did I do?

Ha, yeah! I was definitely trying to cop that sound in the opening riff!

I thought you got a fantastic range of tones out of that set up. What struck me is that you managed to cover all that ground and none of the sounds were compromised. I felt that the clean tones were a little thin for my taste (although I was listening on an iPad), but cool tones nonetheless.

Sounds really good! I agree that the cleans are a wee bit thin, but the other tones sound great and the riffs are very catchy! Is anyone going to be singing on this?

Hmm, the Thundertomate has about 12 dip switches inside it for different EQ curves. I will have a play on that and see if I can't beef things up a bit.

Cool -- keep us posted on the results!

Oh, forgot to answer your other question: the album version does, indeed, have vocals, as well as a LOT more guitars lol.
The live band will have a singer, too. :)

This is the studio release,

Thanks, Vasshu!

So, I had a chance to open up the Thundertomate and, indeed, it was set for on of the TB settings. There are 3 main boost types with this pedal: TV, Fat Boost TB, and a Full Range boost with a low pass filter to just add fatness. I selected one of these settings and will report back on how it works!
