sanding guitar neck

I have a wolfgang standard flame top.I would like to sand the neck down so it can be thinner like an Ibanez neck, which I prefer. Is there any special way of doing this?

Re: sanding guitar neck

if you want an ibanez neck , get an ibanez.. i dont know why one would want that paper neck, but if you want to go that thin, get yourself an ibanez and dont butcher up a perfectly working wolfgang >.<

or go to www.warmoth.com and see if they got a neck that suits you and the guitar.

sanding would not work as it's not symetrical, you'd have to shave quite a lot of it off with one of those 3d copy dremels or whatever

if yer dead serious bout it, take it to a skilled luthier and dont try to do it yourself if you're new to this

I'm not sure but I think that the neck is different joint-wise or maybe scale-wise.

Don't forget Davey some guys do like asymmetrical necks though...that's neither here nor there though.

Anyways if you are set in doing it yourself I would consult johnjohn blulineor...Jeremy has done some of this kind of stuff before.

First you would need to strip off the finish on the back of the neck. I would mask everything I want to save the finish on. (on a tangent I recommend removing finish from neck pockets)

Then I'd spray or apply the stripper, let sit then strip.

After that out comes the sand paper. I'd start with a heavier grit and as I got closer to where I want the neck to be I'd go with a lighter grit.

Now if you are wanting to make it thinner (top of neck to bottom of neck) I don't know what to tell you.

Re: sanding guitar neck

DON'T DO IT. It will weaken the stability of the neck. Ibanez necks are usually reinforced, such as being constructed of 3 pieces, to make them stronger so they don't warp with that thin profile. Just sell the guitar and get an Ibanez

Re: sanding guitar neck

It could probably be done safely. The Wolfgang neck is unfinished, and it's reinforced with a double expanding truss rod and graphite rods. The Wolfgang neck is not compatible with a Strat style neck, so Warmoth is not an option. There are Wolfgang necks up on Ebay now and then, I would consider buying one for this project. Keep in mind that this will totally destroy the resale value, especially if it's not done by a professional.

I'm gonna keep my personal opinions to the above :laugh2:

I don't know what to do but I'd guess the tone would become brighter and thinner possibly if you were to go that thin.

Unless you really love the guitar, I'd just sell it and get an ibanez in that situation if the neck profiles mean that much... Because once it's done it's done, and if you don't like it then your screwed for resale.

Also take into account the wolfie has a very narrow neck, and the ibanez necks are pretty wide so even if you got it to that thin it still wouldn't feel the same... In fact, it'd feel tiny

True...given the cost of Ibanez shredders, why not just pick up one of those and leave the Wolfgang as is? I never said I thought it was a good idea, I just said it could be done safely.

I second that Jaw Drop :smack:

Honestly I think your much better off going with an Ibanez, As nuni said the Wolfie neck is thinner than the standard strat so the neck would not feel like an Ibanez neck.
Ibanez necks are thin and wide , Where the Wolfie is Fat and Thin.It would be interessting to see how that feels a thin and thin neck but if your set definitly try and get a wolfie neck on ebay and have a Pro Do It.

Re: sanding guitar neck

I have to agree with the above, just don't do it. Sell it and buy an Ibanez if that's what you want. You might even have some $ left over.
