SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

I have heard some rumors MGs suck big time. and everyone hates them. But have found they have such a nice tone to them. Who hates them and why. Who like them and why? I own one and find it is an awesome amp yet some feel I am doing a disgrace by owning one.

I really dig my lil 10 watt MG. In fact I would use a bigger version of it if it sounded the same but louder. Not warm bluesy tones, but nice metal ones.

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

i've been using my dad's MG10 as a practice amp and it ****in pisses me off.

Nice metal tones? HOW? I'm using a Gibson SG-X with a CustomCustom in the bridge and a modded DS-1 and a Big Muff Pi and it sounds like a broken radio no matter how I EQ it.

The bigger ones sound good if you never, ever, ever hold a note out. Yngwie-style shredding works awesomely because every note is barely there long enough to register...I wouldn't be surprised if the dudes testing the amps out did lots of sweep picking and finger tapping. For rhythm riffs they are okay if you do lots of CHUG CHUG CHUG stuff and always have your gain on 10.

There are too many amps on the market that sound better for the same price to ever justifty the MG50 or 100 head / cab combo...if you HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO have a Marshall and you WILL NOT WILL NOT WILL NOT WILL NOT WILL NOT save the extra money then, okay, sure, go for it but c'mon. DSL50's are everywhere for like $600 and 1960A cabs go for less than that. Get the real thing!!

i bought my son a mg10 and i think it's a cool practice amp.

having said that, i'm both a tube amp AND jcm 800 corksniffer. i would never use any solid state marshall for anything other than a practice amp. hey, at least i'm honest!!

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

I had an MG250 go through my hands one time, buying it low to resell it, and it was a really fun amp for Marshall tones at bedroom levels. The gain tones were really nice, but the cleans were a bit lifeless. Still, I dug it enough to almost keep it, and sometimes wish I had.

I think a lot of it depends on your guitar, pickups, and hands, because I'm sure it could sound worse if those 3 aren't in order.

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

it's one of those amps where if you built it yourself you'd be pretty happy with the results, but since it's a SS marshall your mind tells you to hate it.

I got to agree.

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

I have one of the older ones it is the MG100HDFX
but have had problems with the jack input at the front. In order to have sustain I need to use pedals. I am contemplating selling it for another type of Marshall. Dunno really what I want at this time. I guess i am looking for reasons to get rid of it. I kept it like new but I know if I will never get what I want out of it.

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

I dont dig the new ones at all, BUT, the old Valvestate line was freckin' awesome for metal tones.

Tons of guys (Wayne Static included lol) used to use those back in the day. Brutal sounding amp and being SS it was uber tight.

Then Marshall totally changed the design or circuit and they'll sounded thin and fizzy every since.

Old valvestate 8100 100w heads though are where its at

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

I have the HDFX MG head paired with a 4x10 loaded with emminence. (the model of speaker escapes me at the moment).

It was the best deal of an amp I found...$175 used in mint free shipping...how is that not a money saver??

I stuck with it because I've played many other solid state amps..peavey fender, kustom..I also played with many different power amps and stuff but this was what ended up working best for me.

There is some truth to bands sound good on these amps when they don't hold the notes out (At least when using the onboard distortion channel). I have 3 pedals that I use with this amp. SD-1, BD-2 and a Tubulator. Between the amp and the pedals, depending on how I arrange them I can get whatever sound I want. (Also have MT-2 but thats besides the point, this amp reacts best to overdrives rather than distortion boxes).

I have had fights with the voicing and eq! Usually when I look for a sound I start with all EQ at 0% I rarely ever move the bass knob because it just adds a swampy mess thats barely focused or even audible at times. I adjust the highs and mids depending on what tone I want and Rarely ever exceed 40 or 50%. I leave the Clean Gain maxxed as well as the overdrive Volume knob and just use the master as a volume control (I actually seem to get fuller sound this way). I've been thinking of making a few mods to the voicing pots and some of the diodes but I haven't had time to experiment (enlisted).

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

I bought my son an MG15 based on several recommendations, and it sounds great for what it is. I think I got it for $45 used or something like that.

Re: SAo who really feels the new MG marshalls really suck?

My former bandmate had one and he constantly told me that my Jcm800 had horrible tone compared to his mg100...go figure...

anyways, it had "ok" gain tone once he:

1- stuck and eq pedal in front of it
2- maxed the gain out
3- lowered the volume on his stock epiphone pick-up to about 5 to keep the thing from squealing

I always noticed how little the guy could recognize good tone (in his mind the only acceptable tone is the v-shaped eq'ed mesa tone) and still he couldn't really attain it. The cleans he obtained from it were absolute garbage.

Yet, it wasn't such a bad tone once all of the above were applied to the mix for his "heavy" tone.

I guess the reason I dislike them so much is due to what this guy did with his. Someone could probably get something good or great out of it, but that experience alone is gonna keep me from owning one...

I think the new 50W MG does indeed sound better then the old MG 50watter it is replacing !
