Saturday morning deep thought...........

I have two Duncan Quarter Pound strat pickups. One is RW/RP. Would it be possible to wire the two of them together to make a single crazy powerful humbucker?

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Short answer: Yes. Not sure how well it would work however.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Could you explain how to accomplish this? I want to wire them together so that when the dragon comes in the night, my super powerful humbucker will slay him.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Electrically - Just wire them in series to create a humbucker.
Physically - Mount them next to each other.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Black wire from first QP to ground.

White wire from first QP to black wire of second QP.

White wire of second QP to selector switch or volume control.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

I totally misread this thread title....lmao.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Isn't that basically what a humbuckler is anyway?

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Yes. Except that the Quarter Pounds are single coils with magnets as their pole pieces. But, yes, they would be wired the same.

Find any diagram you like on the 'net that includes wiring your Strat pickups in series with each other as an option, and you will basically make your pickups into full output humbuckers. If one of them is RW/RP, you will get hum cancelling, but even if they are not, you will still get the same full, loud output, because the crazy power is almost entirely a product of series wiring, and not of humbucking specifically. Note that it will fundamentally sound "in between" like positions 2 and 4 always will. To get a single position tone you're have to cut up the pick guard and arrange for the pickups to be side by side.

Not if it's wired in series like we've been talking about (like a humbucker).

Huh?!

Huh?!

The difference between parallel and series comes down to louder mids and less highs for the most part. Positions 2 and 4 on a strat have a distinctive sound, and it's pretty much the same in series or parallel, except that in series it will have a lot more mids and a lot less highs (hence not much quack anymore). If you want two QP's to make for a crazy powerful humbucker, but still have a bridge or neck focused tone like an HH guitar, then positions 2 and 4 aren't going to get you that, you'd have to have the two pickups either close together at the bridge, or close together at the neck to mimic the pickup positioning of an HH setup.

Maybe OP doesn't even have an SSS Strat, i guess I'm making that assumption.

OP: what kind of guitar is this for?

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Exactly how two QPs connected in series will sound depends to some extent upon the distance between them.

Single coils in series is the essence of the Brian May Red Special sound. The switching array on May's design permits phase reversal. Even with a modified Stratocaster as the host guitar, two single coils in series and in phase will not produce the classic Fender "in between" sound. Instead, bridge + centre is a full Rock sound, centre + neck is the It's A Kind Of Magic chords sound.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

On my Duncan Everything Axe set the bridge HB has a push pull which changes the coils into series. Duncan said with the pull out the pickup is not humbuckling. I thought a humbuckler had one coil reversed to kill the hum.

Re: Saturday morning deep thought...........

Isn't that what the StagMag is?

Yeah. Both constructions will have problems with the magnetic fields of the opposing rods canceling each other too much. The old bar magnet at the bottom thing is a bit cleaner field wise.

I think somebody needs to get off their behind and make a pickup with electromagnets so that you can turn them on and off.
