Saturday night special + chrome covers = bridge split???

Hey guys, so I have this weird issue with a SNS set. Whenever I put chrome covers on (soldered or not) the bridge PU will split into single coil “mode”. Without the bridge cover the Humbucker works just fine...no issues at all.
This is the 3rd iteration on troubleshooting, so I’m pretty confident that everything is connected, isolated, grounded like it supposed to but it still seems like a grounding issue.
Covers came off a set of Gibson ‘57 classics.
PUs are connected to a Gibson quick connect system (2 pin version).
DirtyFingers (2 conductor) were installed originally.
At this point I’ve almost given up on this and my last call would be to replace the SNS with the ‘57s and hope for the best (that they won’t split, cause they’re also splittable).
Tried no covers for a while but on this guitar (SG) i really, really do need that chrome...for a piece of mind
Ok thanks for looking into this and maybe someone has an idea why the splitting occurs and/or how to possibly fix that.
Cheers from Munich, Germany

Welcome to the forum!

Huh, this is a weird one. So the cover is grounding something out..have you noticed any stray wires? I think I might cover the inside of the cover with very thin tape.

Hey Dave... could it be an issue with the lead wires or something else with the internal structure? I have to say that in 15 years of messing with pickups I've never had this happen, and I've taken a lot of covers off and put them back off.

Re: Saturday night special + chrome covers = bridge split???

Thanks for your suggestions. I didn’t notice any ‘funky’ wires and already tried to cover the inside of the cover with electrical tape.
Yeah I couldn’t find anything regarding this issue on the web.
Today I’ve got my hands on a multimeter, so hopefully I’ll find some irregularities.
Alright, enjoy this beautiful Sunday :-)

Anything is possible. I would be very curious to figure out what changes when a cover is put on.

Re: Saturday night special + chrome covers = bridge split???

It sounds like the cover when put on is shorting to a ground. I would check where the leads come into meet the coil wires under the tape. The connections are usually pushed in towards the magnet and just have a small square of tape over them. I guess it’s possible it’s something in the coil itself too.

Re: Saturday night special + chrome covers = bridge split???

ive had issues with fitting gibson covers on duncan pups before but never where it shorted anything.

Re: Saturday night special + chrome covers = bridge split???

How snugly do the covers fit? If the short isn't from the metal in the covers themselves, is it possible that they could be causing a less obvious short internally, by physically squeezing the coils together?
