Saturday Night Special pickups

Thinking of trying the Saturday Night Special pickups in my PRS McCarty, they look like they have a slightly hotter output than PAF type pups which I like. Just curious how you guys are liking them!

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

I can't imagine they'd sound anything less than awesome in your PRS.

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

I just bought a set and put them in an Epiphone SG, and they are amazing! It has a distinct bottom end that slams when you hit a low note, without it sounding muddy at all. They are very clear, a lot of tones ring through, even when heavily distorted. The lead sounds cut through, without being too bright. I'm really impressed with how you can hit a chord and it just seems to ring forever, with tons of clarity. Just running through real quick, I think they sound good for Classic Rock, Punk, maybe some glam metal/80s hair, and grunge. I recommend putting in coil taps, because they have great single tones when tapped. Although I've only had them for about 12 hours, they might be my new favorite pickup.

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

if A4 is the new great thing, why wasn't it done before in big productions?

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

it is believed that A4s have been in production pickups since the earliest PAFs

can you list previous makes and models of mass produced A4 PAFs? by previous i mean before the new A4 based dimarzio and the saturday nights?

anyone with access to Google can find that. it would also be worth the effort to hunt down the info for all the ancillary info that would be of benefit.

I think we will probably start seeing A4 in more pickups, due to the sound of the SNS pickups. I think we will start seeing the A4 show up as a magnet swap in regular production pickups that usually have an A5 or A2. Curious people will try these out, post clips, describe them, and the relative low cost of the magnets themselves will get the ball rolling more.

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

you answered your own question, its the NEW GREAT thing. a4 has been used for years but now its the new cool thing. fralin has been using them for years

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

Quick question from a non technically minded person:

If I get a set of SNS pickups for my 97 LP Classic, would you recommend changing the pots/caps?

The guitar is almost 20 years old and currently has the stock 500T and 496R, don't know what electrics it has, just what it came with.

Thanks guys!

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

I'd be tempted to check what pots you have fitted first. Some LPs came with 300k pots instead of 500k.

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

id throw the pups in first and see how it sounds. if you want more high end then you can change the pots to 500k all around

Re: Saturday Night Special pickups

Yeah, switch the pickups first, and if there is an issue, look at the pots. I think you'd dig the SNS set, as it seems to be a set that many people are really liking now.
