Re: SC sized humbuckers?
One of my favorite topics-
I'm a barden fanatic and recently added cool rails and a cruiser to the SC rails that I use- To me they all have a wonderful quality that is in the middel of a true SC and a hum- To me, they are very much like min hums (ie firebird or LP delux)-
Here's how I use them-
zion swampash/maple strat-
-3 badens with a coil roll off pot
- with 2nd coil almost rolled off they are very strat like
- in the middle their are many differnt flavors- Kind of like a minimal amount of vari-tone
- At full hum they are about the same as a mini-hum- So with the wood selection you get a low sustain but gibsonish sound.
Parker nitefly- HSS - maple/synthetic
-same genreal comments as bardens
-cruiser is in mid position- By itself it seems colorless, but in a band environemt it cuts very well when almost rolled off
-CR is in neck- Actually slightly tighter than the bardens in this position
Of course all of my SC hums are rails, I like the string bending coverage, but overall I'm sold on SChums for what I stated-
But if I need a really heavy hum sound, I go to the bridge on the PArker to catch both coils of the JB- Or I switch to my PRS- And with the coil choices in 2,3,4 position, I can get similar strat/teleish sounds out of the PRS-
So to sum it up, SC hums let me go all the way from clean strat to crunched explorer sounds, whihc is a lot of verstitlity that I could not get with regular SC
Hope this helps!
