SC WHRB

So we've got single coils with 12 pole-pieces now. I know you couldn't get as many windings with the same gauge, not even on a normal humbucker probably (still not positive why it's so much bigger than a regular HB unless it's windings) but you could put those CuNiFe pole pieces in one if you had the tooling. Has anybody done something like that?

Pretty much I'm a fan of the traditional Telecaster bridge and curious what that would sound like. Maybe there's a WRHB Tele bridge I don't know about. I'm guessing it might sound a little like a SD Quarter Pound, but I'd be fine with being wrong there. Those things are hot.

Would be cool in a Strat too. Also interested in a hidden coil for humbucking kinda like Kramer did in the 80's. Could make it easier to get a lot more windings but I dunno what the tonal tradeoff would be like. I've got one of the newer WHRB's that was in the neck of something, hacked a parts Strat up to fit it at the bridge. Sounds alright.

Any relevant conjecture is appreciated. Would you be able to get a similar sound in a single coil package? I guess there's nobody equipped to make smaller CuNiFe pole pieces but with two normal sized single coils wired up together (like I said, you could hide one under the pickguard or something) it might be easier to do, plus you'd have more room for windings I'd imagine.

Re: SC WHRB

I don’t quite get your question. I’m not the smartest tool in the shed, but the WRHB are humbuckers with two larger coils than the regular sized humbuckers. They are not a single coil pickup under a cover. Very full sounding and clean. I’ve never heard a single coil sound like that...then again, I’m no expert..just a fan of buying and trying new stuff. :)

I’m a big fan of the original wrhb’s plus mojotone’s version of them. They do not sound like quarter pounders. I often work on a friends original 72 Tele deluxe and the neck pup sounds incredible....just wow.

Mojotone’s version sounded way better in split mode than humbucker mode. At least in the guitar I have them in. The other closest sounding pickups were a set of Fralin twangmasters with 250k volume and tone pots. I have them in a Tele deluxe American pro. The new American pros have shawbucker WRHB clones, but they are regular humbucker sized, not WRHB sized. The twangmasters are two coils of three poles each. They fit in this pickguard perfectly.

Lol, just realized I didn’t answer any question...I’ll have another beer.

Re: SC WHRB

there are very few maker that use cunife poles anymore since its a pita to work with and have to be a certain size to retain magnetism. ive never heard any other pup sound like those old wrhb

Re: SC WHRB

Cunife is pretty much not made anymore - anywhere......but that is beside the point as there are options for 'sound-a-like' magnets. The WRHB is basically a strong rod magnet humbucker with a wide footprint. A singlecoil size would simply be a single coil. And there are endless options there.
The lil 59s and the like work only because there is a strong ceramic bar magnet below - with a bunch of very thin screws. The concept essentially couldn't be converted to a pole magnet concept due to limited space for the magnet. Even the strat pole magnet setup has considerably less strength than if the pickup had a bar magnet and non-ferrous poles. Trying to get 12 pole mags into the same footprint would make them tiny, and prone to demagnetisation - magnet strength is based on volume.
