Scofield Guitar ID?

Can anybody ID this particular axe that John Scofield's playing here, keeping in mind it's 1976. It doesn't look like a Les Paul or L-6S. Carvin maybe?

Re: Scofield Guitar ID?

i can't id the guitar...but that's one hell of a jam. who's the drummer?

Drummer: Billy Cobham
Bass: Alphonso Johnson
Keyboards: George Duke
Guitar: John Scofield

At the time they were THE TOP CATS playing this new music called "Jazz/Rock" or "Fusion".

God, miss I those days! "sigh"

PS: I can't ID the guitar, but looks like a "souped-up" Japanese import of those days.

Looks like a Jr that's been tweaked. It's still got the P-90 bridge pup, was routed for neck 'bucker and has some whacky looking tailpiece on it but it's a Jr. Can't get a clear shot of the headstock to know if it is a Gibby or a knock-off but I am guessing it is a Gibson from the wear.

+1 for modified LP Junior.

I suggest that it is a genuine Gibbo and that the neck position HB is wired to the Volume and Tone pots and the original P90 is out of circuit.

Never seen a bridge like that before (or since).

Re: Scofield Guitar ID?

Pause it at 3:25 when Sco takes his hand off the guitar...does the bridge pickup look like a phat cat, or is it just me? Also the pickguard seems oddly shaped. Looks like the bridge has a cover added as a hand rest. If the body was thinner I'd be tempted to say modded melody maker, but the headstock is too big. Strange kit, this. Modded LP Junior is probably the right answer.

All that aside, this is a cool jam.

Re: Scofield Guitar ID?

The headstock shape doesn't look like any Gibson I know. Looks more like an Aria or other Jap import from that time, probably made in the Fuji Gen factory, the one that built guitars for Ibanez.

The neck p'up looks like an old DiMarzio Distortion and the bridge p'up certainly looks like a Phat Cat to me. The bridge looks like an old Gotoh from the '70s.

That is just you. The pickup cover is a P90 "dog ear".
